My Stig was neutered yesterday & he's being a trooper so far! Yesterday after we got him home he was still quite out of it. He spent most of the evening whimpering and whining...I felt so bad! We tried using a donut instead of the cone, but he could lick his incision so we had to put the cone of shame back on. He really hates it, and I'm dreading having to keep it on him for the next 13 days. It was huge, so we cut about 3 inches off so he isn't running into things as much as before.



I'm trying to find other treats to stuff his Kong with to help keep him occupied. I've only used peanut butter but I know there's more recipes out there. Any ideas to help us keep our sanity for the next 2 weeks? Thank you!

Seriously though, we wish you and Stig luck and a quick recovery, Buddy will be going thru this in a few months, we've already got a 'Comfy Cone' ready for him.

I use plain yogurt and add banana, blueberries, and close the end with peanut butter. I change it up with some applesauce mixed in, and layer it with some kibble.

My buddy bought a nice soft cone o shame off amazon. Poor little guy. Rio got mri'd last year and didn't like the meds. I haven't made the neuter decision yet. Dog mom thinks it will help the human body part sniffing.

I've found that the regular cone also helps to keep a dog calmer during the healing process. (our vet once commented on how many incisions he'd seen be affected by the fact that a soft cone doesn't keep mouths away from surgery sites as well as the regular one...depending to a certain extent on where the surgery site is) Those two weeks always make me feel bad...and we take the cone off for walks and when all I'm doing is watching the dog (notice I said "I"...my husband can't be trusted to maintain focus on watching)

I'm just trying to keep him from being his usual crazy self. He keeps jumping around and trying to chase the cat. The vet gave us some sedatives, and gave him a half a pill last night, but it made him really disoriented. I don't want to give it to him again, but I might have to.

Have you tried stuffing a kong and keeping him occupied that way in his crate? Or an antler or other chew. I know it won't last forever but it might help. Anthony was jumping around too. When he jumped on the bed I about had a stroke, but I kept checking the incision and he did fine. Good luck!

Thank you! It's hard because he has short legs, so he can't hold a Kong or bone without the cone being in the way. I've had to hold his bone and kong for him. He might just have to spend time in his crate while we're home, which breaks my heart. Hoping the next 7ish days go by fast! I think in a few more days we'll try taking him on a short walk.

Just a thought- but did the vet recommend the cone the entire time? Maybe remove and see if it is even needed. I guess I am one of the lucky few who did not require a cone and my Murphey never once licked or bothered his site.. I am also wondering about if it is because of size of incision made and if stitches were used. My boy had a very tiny incision and no outer stitches were used.. kept him as calm as could be for as long as possible (as if!!) and he was literally back to normal in few days just was limited in his running and jumping.

Luna had to be sedated with Benadryl. The first 7 days are the MOST important... check the incision daily too.
