    Chew Toys

Hi there... We have 2 labs that love to chew... We previously gave them nylabones, however since they are powerful chewers, our chocolate recently cracked 2 molars which needed to be extracted. We also tried bones made by West Paw Design. Last night our other dog chewed it in half and ate 1/2 of it.... This resulted to a trip to the ER vet to induce vomiting.

I have used frozen kongs (with food inside) -- but I only bring those out when they are outside as they tend to get messy.

My question is... Are there any other options for chew toys? They are either too hard which could cause teeth to crack or they aren't strong enough and get ingested.....

Some people on here use antlers for their dogs to chew, deer or elk. I've used raw marrow or knuckle bones but my older boy chipped or wore down all 4 of his canines, so those bones had to go. Not all dogs are wild about antlers, my little one used to chew them, now not so much. My sister's dogs went wild with them when I gave them one Chase didn't want. You could try one or 2 for them and see what they think before buying a whole bunch. I couldn't say if they're harder or less hard than Nylabones but they seem popular. Maybe others will give their experiences with antlers. Here's one place I've gotten some before:

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Goughnut chew toys are the greatest. Our Mocha is a power chewer. There is a red stripe in the center on the green toy we got Mocha almost a year ago and it is still in great shape. If you ever see the red stripe they will replace the toy. The green one we have is a bit softer. They have some black doughnut looking toys that are tougher than the green one we have. Good luck in your search.

Luna's favorite thing to chew is antlers. She prefers moose, then elk, then deer, but loves all 3.

I don't know how you feel about rawhide, but these made in USA retriever rolls last a good while for Archie.

I use these periodically for my two beasts. Bruce could wear one out in less than an hour if I let him continuously chew, I space it so I get about three 20 minute sessions.

I have chewers too. I have yet to find anything that will last. My Murphey can destroy the most indestructible toys.. I would like him to get signed up as the toy test run before market dog! I rotate real bones- some filled some plain. I tried the knuckle bones but they were very messy and my two labs ate those monster looking bones down in no time and had diarrhea for a day or so. Kongs get lost and Murph has chewed through the super strong black ones. No stuffed toys because he eats and shreds every one of those! Chews up sticks and tree limbs in the yard too! At times I think he is part beaver, shark, and lab!
