How to Stop Yellow Spots in Lawn from Dog Pee

I have a 9 year old black lab and he is 110 lbs. His pee turns the grass yellow and we have tried grass guard and grass saver biscuits. We are currently feeding him Zignature Trout and Salmon dog food.

Does anyone have a recommendation on what will work to stop the yellow spots?

For some reason we have never been plagued with urine burns from any of our dogs without us doing anything to consciously prevent them. Our lawns have predominantly been perennial ryegrass, which according to the following article, may help. Maybe this will give you some ideas. I think some people on here have suggested making a "pee spot" for their dogs.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Dog urine will burn your grass...but what really helps is if you can hose down the area with lots of water, immediately after your dog urinates.

If you are able to do this, it will prevent the urine stains.

Potion's and Bandit's breeder gave me a hint. 500 mg of vitamin C per day (I use human chewables) and no burn spots. With her 6 labs I could not find a pee spot in all her dog yards. It has worked for both male and female labs for me but not for Archie, a GSD.

It's an inexpensive thing to try and certainly will not hurt your pup.

Is this something new? Does one single pee in a new spot turn the grass yellow or is it accumulated pee in one spot? An accumulation of pee turning grass yellow is normal and the remedy we use is to just water the grass there and dilute the pee. I don't like to artificially mess with my dog's urine PH just to save grass. But if it's just one pee then his urine may be too alkaline and it may feel to him like it's burning him as well. I'm guessing this happens to the boys the same as it does/did to our one girl. A urine sample to your Vet will tell and a short course of meds will likely return his urine to the PH it should be.

LOL, I was mystified to find yellow spots at random places in the middle of the yard the second spring we had our boy. Once he started lifting his leg he didn't pee in the middle of the lawn any more; only on the bushes along the edges. Finally it hit me, they were all at the edges of where snow banks had been in the winter. Snow banks along the edges of, what other than, pee paths we snow blowed through deep snow. And he peed on the same snow bank corners all winter and it killed the grass.

I have no idea if there is a correlation or not, but ever since I started giving the dogs organic apple cider vinegar, I'm not seeing the burn spots in the yard. I give about a teaspoon and a half every 3rd meal.
