Is his skin anywhere else that dark or does that seem to be a result of the irritation?
Does he wear a collar all the time? Does he wear a collar when you walk him (and does he pull)? What is the collar made of? Does any metal touch his neck?
Our three year old yellow lab has been loosing hair under his neck this started a few months ago. We have taken him to the vet to see if they could diagnose the cause. The vet thought it was food related and suggested for us to change food. We are on the third food change without any improvement. He is now eating Eukanuba and taking Trifexis for heartworm, flea, and worm prevention. I think I am going to try a new vet but I wanted to see if anyone else had run into this problem.
I will attach a photo.
Thanks in advance for any ideas or thoughts,
Bob

My first thought is a collar issue. Does he wear a collar all the time? What type of collar are you using?

Thank you for the reply.
He does have a nylon collar with a chrome latch and tags. We did take it off when this started and have not put it back on. He is a bit over weight and I was thinking it may have been digging into his neck when he was sleeping. We do not take him for walks just because he does not do well on a leash ( yes he pulls very hard) . We do have a very large fenced in yard that he exercise in daily.
His skin on the inside of his legs looks darker than I thought it was before but its not like the neck. The skin on the neck ( at the bald spot) is almost leather like.
He does live in the house and and spends maybe a half hour to an hour a day outside.
Thanks again.
I would get a 2nd opinion or a specialist, a vet that specializes in dermatology.

I will also 2nd the "no to Trifexis", scary stuff. My vet will not prescribe or carry it.

Thanks, I will have to look for a specialist. I just wondered if anyone had run into a similar issue.
My first thought is its from his collar. I had a dog years ago who lost the fur under her neck from the buckle. It took a while to grow back.

The buckle might have nickle in it which is a common skin irritant for humans and dogs.
