I just can't imagine leaving Fran in pain for that length of time. Can your Holistic vet suggest some supplements/herbs to cleanse her liver/system prior to the next surgery? I would think there would be something that would help. Sending good thoughts for your sweet girl.

Poor girl, I wouldnt wait either, I cant stand to see a dog in pain. I do respect the opinion of holistic vets for the most part but I would be more comfortable with the opinion of a regular vet
I don't envy your situation and I'm sorry this is happening to your girl. Brandy just had some fairly extensive dental work done on Thursday (she's 10-1/2) and I was a nervous wreck. Her procedure took about an hour and a half, but they used both Propofol and Isoflurane. It was included on the estimate they gave me, so I knew ahead of time. I took her to a veterinary dentist as well, and I'm so glad I did. He was so good. He told me Propofol got a bad rap because of Michael Jackson, but that it's a very good drug and it's what he would want for himself. Brandy was a bit unsteady on her feet at first, but they let her go home about an hour after she woke up and by late evening, she was almost back to normal. She handled it much better than what my regular vet gave her 2 years ago for her last dental. I think if Fran is otherwise healthy, I would take the chance to relieve her pain.

I'm not sure the science behind 'can't sedate' in short intervals. With the newer shorter acting anesthetics like propofol (think colonoscopy meds) which are IV sedation instead of general anesthesia, I would vote for lessening the risk of infection. I found two articles; one a blog type posting regarding the myth re frequent anesthesia with the example used being dogs who need to be sedated for radiation during radiation treatment and the other was a study where they studied intervals of anesthesia; two weeks vs 4 weeks with no statistical difference. Add the fact that you're in the hands of a dental specialist who uses anesthesia regularly and I'd feel pretty comfortable.
PS: my husband just had his hip replaced and he got an epidural and IV sedation. The difference in recovery is remarkable. Dogs still can't jump on him but he was up and walking Day 1! Sometimes science is a good thing, yes it comes with risks but the advances are pretty impressive. I actually worked for Merck for 25 yrs and am thrilled to see they have developed an Ebola vaccine as was announced this week. Good luck and sending good thoughts.

I'd go with the regular vet in this case. Also FWIW Metacam scares me. Hope she gets relief soon.

Went back to the holistic vet today and we're good to go. She's happy with the effects of the supplements. She even wanted me to move the surgery up but I'm not going to try. They're overbooked as it is and Fran is supposed to go off her supplements three days before surgery so the earliest I could get in anyway is three days before her current date. I'm starting to think that the holistic vet doesn't really have a sense of time but she is great at what she does so I'm glad she's on board because I hate arguing with her. I've had to do that before with the rabies vaccine issue and it got pretty uncomfortable.

Great news! I am so glad Fran will be feeling better sooner rather than later.
