    Partial Diarrhea?

For the last 2 weeks ever since I transferred boomer to our new apartment he's been having on and off diarrhea. Most of the time the first 70% of it comes out solid and then the next 30% he strains and it's a different color and a greenish color and there's a lot of mucus in it. Sometimes however it comes out completely solid and the next time it comes out all diarrhea.

Well this morning he threw up twice and my GF (who watches him during the day) said he's fairly lethargic today, just sleeps on the couch all AM and when she tries to get him outside he doesn't wanna move. He ate breakfast fine (post throwing up) and he hate his lunch fine just now.

I did recently bump him up in the quantity of food I give him a day but we've stayed on the same brand. He's on purina pro plan large breed puppy and is 5.5mo old.

I'm a little concerned now that he's just really sleepy however I'm confused because he'll eat all his food normally.

    Thanks!
    T.J.

I would have puppy checked for giardia. Make sure vet sends a sample out to a lab, it can be hard to find.

Giardia was my first thought too. Not unusual at all with labs putting everything in their mouths. Sometimes it's hard to diagnose at it does not "shed" in all poops. May take a couple of samples. Normally you can just take a sample in to the vet but with the lethargy, I would get him in too.

    Good luck.

I scheduled an appt for monday, they didn't seemed too concerned about getting him in ASAP.

Think I should give him rice and beef over the weekend with probiotic yogurt?

I also thought giardia, and they want a stool sample, should I get the diarrhea stuff or the solid stool? Or doesn't it matter?

Stool samples should be a part that did not touch the ground. I just did a routine fecal for Bacon, and he looked at me so funny when I followed him around with a little baggie waiting for him to poo.

the firmer stool is better for testing. Watery diarrhea is not good for testing. If the diarrhea is thick enough take some of that along with the solid.

I would have them test for coccidia as well.

How much did you increase his food per meal? Over feeding can cause diarrhea.

His being lethargic and not wanting to go out would worry me. I would have the vet check him out. There could be a number of reasons for it.

we went from 3.5 cups a day to 4.5 but it was 5.5 one day because of lack of communication.

What should I feed him tonight? Should I try some beef and rice with pumpkin and maybe yogurt? What portions?

I think you are over feeding him at 4.5 cups per day when you look at the feeding guidelines on the bag.
This is from the purina page.

He may be over eating, try cutting it to 4 cups a day and see if it helps. I only increased food by 1/4 cup increments at a time.

If his stools have been loose all day try rice, beef and a little yogurt tonight and tomorrow and see if it helps. The lethargy would concern me if it continues. Maxx had ocassional sleepy days as a puppy and I swear I would look at him 2 days later and he had visibly grown. But if it continues in to tomorrow I would definitely be at the vet because it is not normal for a puppy to be like that for an extended period of time.
