I think my Fran is an addict.

We really had to up Fran's Tramadol while she was healing from her dental surgery. It was very painful and we just knocked her out. She was also taking carprofen at the same time. Then all of the prescribed drug runs ran out and apparently she was supposed to go cold turkey. But she had been on Tramadol for over a month before that so she was not a happy camper. The gums look great and there is no foul odor from her mouth but she rubs against me periodically and follows us around like she needs something which has never been a good sign. I had extra Tramadol from another prescription so I've decided to wean her off of it with smaller doses farther apart. We have an appointment tomorrow.

Has anyone else had this problem? It's an opiate after all (or synthetic opiate, I guess). What did you do?

I have never had to take a dog off of it. How old is she and does she have any other issues that could be causing her pain? My vet said it is safe for long term use. I would definitely talk to the vet about keeping it on hand for her, in case she needs it. Is it possible she could be looking for the extra attention she got while so sick? Poor baby.

She's coming up on 13. I don't think it's extra attention. She's pretty anti-social as a general rule unless it's about my husband. In other words, she only comes to me when she really needs something. Shoot. I hope it's nothing more.

I just don't see any reason you could not be giving it to her once daily. At 13 I am sure she has aches and pains, it is pretty normal. I know my Emma feels much better on it, she is 10. If she takes it for the rest of her life I am fine with that. Don't worry about there being anything else wrong.

That honestly never occurred to me. Fran has never had even the hint of arthritis or any other aches and pains. She was only on it because of her infected cyst and her teeth and that all happened at the same time. I'll definitely ask about having it on hand at her appointment.

I've taken Tramadol in the past...it should never be stopped cold-turkey. I'd ask the vet about just leaving her on it at this point.

What about her ears? When Maverick's ears itch he rubs his whole body across the side of the couch.

Wonder if the Tramadol gave Fran a "good" feeling aside from aches and pains. More laid back feeling? Don't think going cold turkey after that amount of time is a good thing.

The vet agreed. We have a plan to take her off of it gradually.
