Fran does NOT have a blocked salivary gland.

Spent all night trying to massage the spit out of this thing and got all of maybe an hour of sleep, checked her out and there was no getting it down. Then it started to swell up and I thought she might be having an allergic reaction so I gave her 25 mg of Benadryl but it felt like her throat was closing up. So I called the dental group before they even opened and they answered the phone. The surgeon was there and during the course of the conversation, she made it clear that she was trying to cover her butt. In short, she wanted me to travel over two hours to the top vet hospital in the state for a CT scan because a surgeon she knew was there and she wanted to "clear her conscience". Now, mind you, I think that Fran's throat is closing up. It could be allergies. It could be infection. Regardless, this thing is beside her eye and it's huge. I told her that someone needed to see Fran before that and she started hemming and hawing about "well, if that's inconvenient . . . " It's not inconvenient! She needs to see a vet. Like, right now. So I said fine but we're taking her to the emergency hospital that's just 15 minutes from her office then we can take her to get a CT scan later as soon as she is out of the weeds. And she says, "Well. They have a CT scanner." My hand just slammed down on the table.

Called emergency and described the situation and the receptionist goes through this whole fee schedule thing. OK. Fine. We've been there before. I just said that. Then she says that I should call my regular vet and now I'm so upset because our regular vet just found out that her 20-something son is terminally ill so she's not practicing at the moment and that office has minimal facilities anyway. I explain that I'm trying to streamline this process since they have a CT scanner and she explains that she just got on shift and the doctor is doing rounds and this isn't a great time and I just started to cry.

Long story short, it's just an abscess. It took most of the day to get to her and they had to put her under to do a full dental exam at the e-vet but they were able to drain it through her cheek and now she's on a full blown course of antibiotics. Just a lot of pus but putting pressure on her eye and that whole area. Granted, there may be something going on as a result of her dental surgery but if there is, it's because the surgeon left something behind because everything is fully healed in her mouth. My husband is barely functional. I have rarely seen him this angry.

That is awful! What a jerk the vet was and the receptionist at the ER clinic gets the same award. Poor Fran, sending lots of healing thoughts and no more illness or boo boos her way.

Sounds like that vet needs a slap up-side her head. I absolutely hate the "cover your a55" and "arrange something with a crony" behavior that I've run across myself...and so much worse in a seeming emergency.

I'm glad Fran should be on the mend now...you've been on a roller-coaster with your sweet girl.

I like the way you think!! A slap upside the head sounds very appropriate. Maybe we can all carpool and help her out with that, lol!

OMG! So much stress for you, husband, and Fran. When a dog's in distress, why the heck would the so-called animal healthcare workers click into officious mode?

Wow. Poor Fran. Sounds like they need a dose of compassion. Shame on them.
