    Metacam Question

Morning all. Bailey had her dew claw cut down last night at the Vet as she split it into the quick. A lot of pain and blood. She is bandaged up now and I can tell she is not comfortable. Vet prescribed 7 days of antibiotics and metacam once a day for a few days. I gave her the metcam dosage last night but now I am reading a lot of people concerned with using it. I am curious if the risk is more for the long term use or it is still a concern for a few days? I will not use it anymore if it can cause more harm but I also don't want to have her in pain needlessly. I gave her the metacam last night about 30 minutes before she ate. If I give it to her tonight, I plan on putting it in her food to help as I would when I take Advil. Thanks for any feedback.

We haven’t used it but have used Deramaxx and Rimadyl which come with similar concerns, although Metacam is said to be even safer. My vet told me (specifically to the Rimadyl) that when given for two weeks or less there isn’t really any reason to worry (although of course keep an eye on your dog for immediate drug reactions). If the dog will be on it longer than that is when they run blood tests to make sure liver function, etc., isn’t being affected. While liver damage is the most serious concern, the most common reactions to these types of drugs is actually gastrointestinal upset, so if you see signs of nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, etc., stop the drug and call your vet.

That said, Scully was on Deramaxx for 7+ years with no problems; Mulder was on Rimadyl for almost 2 years with no problems, and Chloe has done several short courses of Rimadyl, also with no problems.

Thank you Annette. I only plan on giving it to her until Monday night when the Vet said I could remove her bandage (3 days) so I will just give her the dosage with food for the next 2 nights and keep an eye out for any symptoms. Thank you again!

For short term it's fine. It's even fine for longer use, I used it on my senior who had arthritic problems. When my dogs hurt themselves, I give them a pill (we use the human form, Meloxicam).

Sort term, I don't see a problem. Potion was put on Rimadyl for arthritis. Vet did do a basic blood panel. On a two week follow up panel she had elevated liver values. Took almost 3 months to get her liver values back to normal. Mardi is on Rimadyl now also for arthritis. Again, basic panel done and two week follow up was completely normal. Six week follow up completely normal. Going to keep a close watch on her but she seems to be tolerating is quite well.

I think all of our furkids have been on Rimadyl at one time or another (post spay/neuters or dental work) and other than Potion, all have tolerated it without problems.

My dog ended up with a gastric ulcer from Metacam, and she was only on it for one week. So it can still do damage with short term use. Definitely give it with food and if you are uncomfortable using it, call your vet and ask for another pain reliever that is not a NSAID, like Tramadol.
