if your sister is gone for such a long period of time did she not leave money for the care of her dog? who is buying the food? Now you know how fast an emergency can occur, it's a great time to chat about having an agreement and plan in place in case the dog DOES need emergency care before your sister is back. It's not cool to leave the country (even if it is to help a loved one) with no provisions for the care of her dog.

Can you not just bring the dog in and train it? doesn't sound like your sister will be back super soon. Maybe if hte dog is trianed and doing well indoors she'll be open to keeping it indoors? because this is not at all a good life for the poor dog. it's not fair to them.
I agree. I've never liked that Coconut is an outdoor dog. The only reason she got the dog is because she wanted one and my mother said that if she adopted one the deal was that she was never going to play video games anymore and she was going to dedicate time to the dog. Never happened. I knew adopting him was a bad idea. No, she has no money and I'm the one buying his food, toys, etc. and now I'm just left with a few bucks because I bought him more dog food this weekend. I told her I wanted to take him to a Labrador sanctuary and she refuses.

I just hope Coconut will be fine. I'm constantly checking on him and he's still fine. I'll keep everyone updated.

Hmmm. You don't have the money for a vet, but you have the $49-$65 it costs to call a pet poison hotline? It's not free to call them, unlike the human one.

The orange poop usually means somethings going on with the liver... and the liver is what would process rat poison... Order milk thistle online and start the dog on it immediately if you can't afford the vet visit

I remain incredulous for a variety of reasons.

It would be great to see a photo of poor little Coconut, of course.

Glad the pup is safe too. Thank you for your caring for you sisters dog and bringing him from the cold but you must understand our concerns we have for the dog as we (here on this board) consider our dogs our children and would never leave them tied up outside especially in winter. I think this board could possibly help you help this dog in some way i.e. by either finding it a rescue or a better home if you are interested . But first where are you located? Where is Penny Lane in the States? Canada? the Far east? Knowing this will help in determining how we can help. also, since you have over 5 posts, can you show us a photo of Coconut (just because we like photos).

If you are buying food and toys he is your dog now no matter what the original decision was. Or if the parents brought the dog into the house then he is THEIR responsibility as adult and decision makers. If that isn't "clear" then talk to your parents but generally the person paying for the bills and caring for the dog is the owner. Your sister seems to have given up any responsibility and ability to be called "owner" of this dog.

I am not sure how old your (or your sister) are, and it's none of my business, but it's time for a family meeting about the dog NOW. With your sister not paying any bills, not caring for the dog and being out of the country it really isn't "her dog" by any means. So the family needs to be talk about what is in the best interest of the dog. Either the adults in the house take responsibility for the bills (including proper vet care) and proper care (meaning not leaving the dog outside alone) or he be rehomed to a family that will care for him. I don't say this to be mean but the dog deserves more and saying "it's my sister's dog" is not an excuse. the adults here need to make a decision and put the dog's best interest first and foremost. This is not a fair life for the dog. If he HAD eaten poison he would have suffered A GREAT DEAL because no one was willing to bring him to the vet.

If you don't have money what about the adults in the house?

It was actually free! I called the Tomcat's pet poison hotline and it was free and she was a lot of help.

He's never tied outside. He runs free outdoors. The reason I tied him up in the garage is because he destroys everything in his path. Reason he got a hold of that stupid rat poison (I think).

Tomcat doesn't have such a hotline. I just checked.

Tomcat Mouse Traps and Pest Control Products - Tomcat

The "pet poison helpline" charges $49 per call.

    I hope you're having fun.
