    Ear Infection

Hi all, hoping for some advice. I had Cleveland at the vet today because his left ear is inflamed and dirty. Looks like he has a yeast infection, waiting on results, second infection now in the last year and a half. I clean his ears once weekly with a gauze or cotton ball because they seem to get waxy fast. I'm beginning to think he has some kind of food allergy. Worst part is, I have drops I have to put in his ears twice daily and he is making it very difficult. My wife and I are having a difficult time holding him down and it's making him scared of us. He keeps running away from us even when we don't plan on putting the drops in and it's making us upset. He went from a dog that never had a problem with me cleaning his ears, to a dog that doesn't want any part of it. Any tips on making this easier on us and Cleveland?

One of my dogs has chronic ear infections. What are you putting in his ears?

For putting in the drops try sitting down low, I sit on the side of the bathtub. The bathroom has the added advantage that it is a small room and I can shut the door. Have Cleveland sit between your legs, facing away from you. You can clamp your knees around his chest. Now you have both hands free, one to hold the dropper, the other to hold his ear back, and come at his ears from behind his head. Do this several times with No drops, give him some treats instead. If he is the age of your avatar this will be harder, he'll be so small, maybe then try sitting on the floor. Good luck.

The vet gave us Surolan drops to put in his ears.

He's 2 years old now. The avatar is him at 8 weeks. Thanks for the advice. I will give it a shot. He was much better this morning letting me put the drops in.

We have a horrible time if we try to hold Maverick. What works best for us is giving him a little freedom. He likes to get in the bathtub and put his front feet on the ledge of the tub. This elevates him so we don't have to bend but keeps him in one place as the tub isn't big either. And keep in mind to that his ears hurt and you are inserting drops that don't feel good into an ear that already hurts. It will get better tho as his ears feel better.

You are absolutely right. He's probably running from us when he knows we are going to put the drops in because his ear hurts. Like I said, he didn't fight too much putting the drops in this morning so maybe his ear is feeling better.

Hoping you don't have to deal with the issues we have had with Aowyn. We have over the years figured out the foods and the time of the year when she would get ear infections so we could do preventative but that wasn't always effective. Just be mindful of it because if they are shaking their head too much it can cause them to get hematomas in their ears and they may need to be drained.

We just dealt with a yeasty ear ourselves two weeks ago. We didn't have to do drops (though it said on the tube "put 8 drops in affected ear"), it was a white ointment called Otomax.

We liked to do what I call the "sneak attack" because Reggie acts like we're trying to kill him when we want to put drops in eyes or ears or clips nails or anything. So for this, I would have my husband distract him by snuggling (this is easier because then he has a hold of Reggie so he can't jump up and take off running) or playing with him. I'd get the tube ready, and NOT let Reggie see it. Then I'd just wander over like normal if I was just coming to pet him and flip up his ear and squeeze some in. I'm not sure I was getting the "8 drops" because it's not drops that comes out, but his ear cleared up just fine. Then I just flip his ear back down and rub it all around to try and get the ointment in well and kind of moved around a bit.

I'm wondering if it's food related as well because Reggie's on a special diet right now because of Colitis, and the food has grains and gluten in it that I would not normally have him on, but I'll have to see if it comes back.
