Exclamation DNA from Pure-Bred Labs Needed!

Hello! My name is Susannah Sample and I am a veterinary surgeon at the University of Wisconsin's Veterinary School. I came about this website today and thought it would be a great place to reach out to the Labrador community, so here goes!!

My team is currently studying the genetics of two diseases that affect Labrador retrievers: laryngeal paralysis and cruciate ligament tears (ACL knee tears). We are collecting DNA (using either saliva swabs or blood) from both affected and unaffected Labradors for both conditions, and are working hard to expand our recruitment across North America.

More information about our research team can be found on by google search of: lab/CORL (the Comparative Orthopeadic Research Laboratory website)

I've outlined below what dogs qualify for each study, which can also be found on the above website (because these are separate diseases, some dogs may only qualify for one study, but many dogs qualify for both). We are looking for pure-bred Labradors that have pedigree information or AKC/ CKC registration. Please note that all information about dogs and pedigrees is kept strictly confidential.

Cruciate ligament tearing (ACL rupture in the knee):
Affected dogs: Any dog that has suffered from an ACL tear
Control dogs: Labradors over the age of 8 with no history of knee problems and normal knee radiographs
Please note: we do need knee radiographs (x-rays) from dogs to be a part of this study! We can work with you to have these made or have prior radiographs sent to us through your veterinarian.

    Laryngeal Paralysis:
Affected dogs: Dogs that are 9 years of age or older with a diagnosis of laryngeal paralysis (also known as GOLPP)
Control dogs: Dogs over 12 years of age with no history of noisy breathing, bark change or hindlimb weakness.

If you have a dog or know someone who has a dog that may qualify for these studies we would really appreciate your help! If you are interested and your dog qualifies, we can send you a package with more information, a short questionnaire, and saliva swabs, along with a return envelope and shipping label.

Do let us know if you would be interested in participating in this work! The best way to contact us is through the e-mail associated with this posting.

Can we share to facebook pages etc? Have you posted on the RTF (Retriever Training Forum)?

I have been lucky w/ regard to CCL/ ACLs but my first lab had LP in her later years. Have several friends who are dealing w/ the issues currently. Anne

We have an 8 year old lab who would be a good control. She's been a HT dog, gotten her MH... so she has been an "athlete" throughout her life. The only x-ray she has ever had done has been of her hips, (so full body in supine position). What radiographic views do you need.

I have a good test dog for you, 1yr old chocolate lab that just got TPLO done for a partial ACL tear. I'm really excited to see this b/c the vet said they haven't determined if ACL tears are genetic but they have a hunch it is. They told me it is found to be genetic in Newfoundlands but there just isn't enough research/money put into it for labs yet.

Sucks when you pay good money for a dog with great health clearances and he blows a tire one year in...

I'd love to help. I have a dog who tore her left CCL at 9 months old and the right CCL at 3 years old. She's had surgery on both knees, so there are plenty of radiographs for you to see! But I don't see an email address in your post?

I looked her up online, since she left no contact info, and I guess you could contact her at the email address on her webpage at U of Wisconsin:

I don't see an address on her profile page. I guess when we register Woody gets our email address but it's not on our profile pages for everyone to see.
