Hot Spot on his Lip? And other random health updates

Hallo! I had a username on here but I've either forgotten what it was or it was deleted, so I'm back! I'm sorry If I did anything to offend anyone to get it deleted, because I didn't mean to!

Anywho, My lab Ripley is doing very well after having had surgery to correct a Luxating Patella in his right rear leg. His walk has gone from a severe limp to lovely stroll! And no more knee caps popping out! Well, at least on the right side. His left leg has started to decline, likely from having to compensate after surgery. His left patella has gone from a grade 1-2 (out of 4) to a grade 2-3. The vet isn't sure if he maybe misstepped and strained a muscle, causing the knee to appear worse, or if his knee is actually getting worse, so he's been prescribed an anti inflammatory to see if that helps him get better. If not, we'll have to talk surgery for his left knee as well. Boo!

The main reason I'm writing this post, though, is because today I noticed a rather nasty thing on Ripley's lower lip. He has skin allergies and problems and it's getting to be that time of year where he gets hot spots, and when Ripley gets a hot spot, it's always a big huge one. However, I've never seen one on his lip!! It concerns me because hot spots need to be as dry as possible to heal quickly and a dog's mouth is often very moist. I cleaned it with some wounds cleaner that I always use and took some pictures to show you all. Keep in mind that his lips are solid black when they are normal and healthy, and the spot I'm talking about is very pink and red. The first picture is his lip how it naturally rests, and the second is me pulling on it to show you the entire "hot spot." Any advice on how to help this heal better, or could it maybe be something else? I have to call Ripley's vet with an update when he's finished with his meds for his leg so if it's not any better by then I'll tell the vet and likely take him in to have it looked at.

EDIT: These pictures are after I cleaned it. Before cleaning it there were a lot of puss droplets all over it that wiped off pretty easily.

Does he chew on sticks, long bones, etc.? It looks to me like something he rubbed...enthusiastic chewing = hair loss etc.

And the board crashed...we all had to re-register...it wasn't you.

Oh, well that makes me feel better! Whew! I thought I did something wrong

About the only thing he has to chew on is a marrow bone, at least as far as things that might rub bad enough to cause that. He's had them plenty of times before but never had anything like this happen. I have noticed over the last several weeks that he will rub his nose/face on the carpet or on his paws as if it irritates him. That's actually how I noticed it; he has spots of blood on his paw and leg so I checked him over and found his lip like this. He's never been a big chewer, either. Mostly he just destroys stuffed animals that I buy for him. I have no idea what could cause it other than my dog is so high maintenance that he can't ever have a moment of pure health -.- If it's not his hot spots it's his joints, and if it isn't either one of those he's itching or his stomach is upset. I swear! Even my vet says he's high maintenance for a dog...He's not even 3 yet! But I love him.

Hopefully this will clear up without an problems but I'm going to keep an eye on it. It is red and a little inflamed but not severely so. If I notice it plumping up any worse he's going to the vet immediately, otherwise I'm going to wait.

Usually I clean his hot spots twice a day and they are gone within a week. Maybe I should clean this one more often to help keep it dryer?

Grace had something like that a month or so ago. Just keep it dry with a tissue and wipe Neosporin on it. It should go away relatively quickly.

It does not look like a hot spot. I would not want him licking Neosporin (antibiotic) all the time. I would use bag balm instead. won't hurt if he ingests it.

My sister's dog had something similar looking last year. Except his was worse; on both sides of the mouth. Vet said he had likely rubbed the skin raw from chewing bones, etc and bacteria had gotten in there and it was infection. Put him on an antibiotic and it cleared up. I also suggested to her that she switch from ceramic bowls to stainless steel just in case the bowls were harboring any bacteria (I know she doesn't wash the bowls regularly). I don't know if she switched bowls or not.

If it's like Grace's it's in the crease of the lip and you put some neo on it once or twice a day, they don't lick it off. And this was cleared by the vet who saw her, so I think if they ingest some neo, it's OK. They don't lick it "all the time", it cleared in 2 days.

I don't like using neosporin on anything that even remotely looks like a hotspot, just because spots like that need to be kept dry and putting neopsporin on it keeps it moist.

Luckily, several days of constant cleaning and wiping and spraying with wound cleaner (doggy peroxide) has helped it clear up; it's still not 100% better but it is certainly on it's way!
