    Paralysis of the trachea

Sadie is going to be 11. She has severe hd in her right hip, tends to drag her back paw at times. Hd in her left hip and a acl surgical repair at 3 1/2 on her left knee. She trips and occasionally falls when making turns...doesn't matter what type of surface she is on. Her liver enzymes are high. Walking her is seldom now.

She has been diagnosed with paralysis of the trachea. We need to keep her calm. she pants like crazy and can eventually suffocate. Our vet does not recommend surgery because of her age but not necessarily her age only, but because of her other issues, with her liver, knee, and hips.

I am completely torn about whether to do the surgery or not. Has anyone else ever dealt with this type of the situation with the paralsis of the trachea but also along with her other severe issues and age.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

    Hi,

I'm sorry you're facing this dilemma, I hate my dogs getting older with the issues it brings. There are a few who have or have had dogs with laryngeal paralysis. One of bett's dogs has it now, one of JenC's dogs had it, can't think of who else. Don't recall who may have had the tie back surgery. Here's one thread I found on it, by someone whose dog was going to have the surgery. I don't know the link to the Yahoo group, but maybe you could search for it. Good luck with your Sadie.

New Here! Lar Par surgery tomorrow

Maybe this is the Yahoo group and it appears to get the most info you need to join the group:

There are 2 different things here. Collapsed trachea and Laryngeal Paralysis (LP). I'm guessing you are talking about LP and if so, I went thru that w/ my first lab Winnie. I chose not to have the tie back (of the laryngeal flaps) surgery, rather just manage her condition. It sounds like she already has some neurological effects, so though the tieback surgery would help thru preventing the breathing issues w/ excitement etc, it is not going to reverse the neurological effects of the disorder. There are a couple support groups (both Yahoo as I recall-- one more conservative/holistic, one more pro-tieback surgery) online for more info.

Thank you all for commenting. I really appreciate it. Your comments basically supported what my husband and I had thought, that we would not put Sadie through the surgery. I don't like to see her getting older and I don't like to see her going through what she's going through that's why I was starting to get a little weak on rethinking about the surgery versus not surgery.

I actually just read about someone losing her Lab yesterday to LP by way of pneumonia. The dog was being treated and the LP managed for a year and then she had a bad breathing episode leading to a tube placement and pneumonia set it, which went to sepsis. I think I would do the surgery. Not being able to breathe is a tough thing to endure I would think.

Actually the tieback surgery makes them *more* prone to aspiration pneumonia because the laryngeal flaps (normally closed when drinking/ eating/swimming etc) are now sutured open. The tieback surgery also does nothing to slow the rest of the neurological damage, so rear end issues, incontinence, dementia, etc continues. It's a no win situation either way, and so some of us choose to keep our dogs cool (inside in AC, non stressed emotionally, etc) and when that is no longer giving quality of life, deal with it. Winnie was 13.5 when I took her to be PTS. The surgery is rather major btw, so unless the dog in question is relatively young, it'd not be something I'd want to do.

Wow-so what exactly does the surgery do? There is no cure?

I do not recommend "tie back" surgery for Labs that swim as they are very prone to aspiration pneumonia. Make sure her thyroid level has been checked as it can be a factor in Labs with LP. I recommend using acupuncture and herbs as they do a good job for strengthening that area. In 35 years of practice and several years at the ER in Dallas, I have only seen one Lab that came in with severe respiratory distress due to LP. That dog had very low thyroid function and when that was resolved, it helped the LP.

No there is no cure to LP. You can only hope to slow the process. I give my dogs cholodin supplements in their senior years ever since Winnie. Knock hard, but haven't had to deal w/ it since. It does tend to run in lines.

Hudler had it. Nothing we could do. There is actually a study going on now, you might want to look into it: 403 Forbidden
