I went through a somewhat similar situation with my 7 year old lab last fall. I moved to Colorado and had my mom send her out here after I got settled with work. My dog has only had diarrhea once that I was aware of prior to our move (and that was after she ate through multiple pairs of my and my roommates underwear after tearing apart our clothes baskets...so gross and gave me a heart attack thinking of all the intentional blockage potentials). When we moved, I had decided to switch her from Purine One Smartblend Lamb & Rice to a "ritzier" dog food, Taste of the Wild. I did the swap slowly over 2 weeks with no problems. After a week on it, BAM. Came home to explosive diarrhea ALL OVER the white carpet in our rental. I nearly had died.

I figured she had giardia, but test came up negative. Vet put us on Metrodiazonal, that helped. As soon as we finished, back to diarrhea. It cleared up after a few days on chicken, rice, and cottage cheese mixture. But then, for about the next 8 weeks, she had diarrhea and/or loose stool regularly. My vet had no idea why. My mom finally suggested I take her off the higher quality dog food and put her back on Purina One. I did the swap slowly again over 2 weeks and (knock on wood) she has not had diarrhea since. So it could be something in the dog food, but may not be allergies. After I told the vet we swapped back, she told me it could have just been the higher oil content that got her going when she had more than just the exact amount of food in her system (i.e. Treats, grass because my dog thinks she part cow and grazes, the flavoring off a bone, etc.).

So I would suggest maybe swapping to a dog food that's less oily? It worked for us. As crazy as it sounds, my dog's gut has done better in Purina One, which I know isn't the most popular choice for quality dog food, than she did on the high quality stuff. She only gets 2c per day (1 cup in AM, 1 cup in PM), so swapping her over during a 2 week period was plenty of time for me to do it slowly. I would maybe talk with the vet and see if there are certain other similar dog foods you could try swapping him too.

And in the meantime, feed him canned pumpkin. I learned that (plus the occasional dose of liquid pepto when it was REALLY bad), helped get things back in shape pretty swiftly. I gave her a few tbsp throughout the day whenever her gut was upset, sometimes going through half a can a day. I still will freeze some in her kong every day just for my own sanity 😁

My vet also told me that freezing cottage cheese and/or applesauce (sugar free, make sure it has NO artificial sweeteners). I usually do a layer of two or all three, to keep her busy and keep her from inhaling it all at once. But hopefully that helps a little bit until y'all can get to the source of the problem!

I never caught how old your dog/pup is?

    dehydration can cause diarrhea.

    medications can also cause diarrhea.

hope all is good. puppies can get soft poo, at least my chili did but for only a short time...cured itself.
