The draining did not work for mine. She ended up having surgery.

Keeping them from bothering an ear is difficult. The snood looks like a good idea.

I agree with you about plastic. At one time we got into that habit but have learned. I always keep a "dog card" just in case and only use it every couple of months for something small to keep it current. It's immediately paid off when the bill arrives. We have other cards but if used they are paid off. In my mind I simply subtract the amount paid on the card from the checking account so that there is always funds to cover. They have come in very handy when we encountered an emergency, like needing a new battery for the Ace In The Hole sump pump.

Did the vet say anything about warm compresses to keep the opening clean and draining? I hope this takes care of Sprockettes ear and you dont' have to do surgery.

I can't imagine how difficult life would be w/o credit cards. To me, they are a debt consolidation tool that saves me time and money. I pay for nearly everything w/ a CC, then write one check instead of many when the bill comes. That's how I was always taught to look at them (my dad would have killed us if we ever ran a balance on a CC or if we had an overdrawn checking acct!). Both of my cards give me cash back too, so they are paying me in the end...

Our emergency vet clinic often won't let folks thru the door if they can't put down a CC or cash right up front and I have to say after watching someone do a "D & D" (the old dine and dash) one night, leaving their dog there!, I can't say I blame them as they have bills to pay too.

Surgery is not always the cure. Steroids (oral) can do the job as they did for my old girl years ago with hematoma in both ears (no idea where they came from - no scratching, head shaking or hear infection).

However, with my Miya I drained 3 times - kept coming back - steroids did not work. I did not want her under anesthesia (a very tedious and long surgery)with all she had been thru with surgeries in the past so I opted to let it take its course and she now has a cauliflower ear.

    It gives her character :-)

I had to take her back in to the vet today to get her ear rebandaged, one of the vet came out and told me that they can put a drain in her ear and see if just letting the fluid drain will help it heal properly. This option would cost less than the surgery, and would just be a local anesthetic.. I'm glad to have another option.

Glad you have another option. I've never heard of aural hematoma before. Sending healing mojo or Sprockette.

Well, after discussing the options with my mom (she's going to help out), I have scheduled Sprockette for the surgery on Monday. The drain option would have been cheaper, but after she pulled the bandage off on Saturday night, I'd rather not have to monitor something else that she could pull out...
