Thank you all, here and on my Mum's thread.

Back to Oban. Lainie sent me this:

    What Causes Inflammatory Bowel Disease?

We started the ground turkey diet with pumpkin last Thursday night. Met the holistic Vet on Friday for a two hour exam ( and I was up till midnight filling in the intake questionnaire on Wednesday) and she agrees with the diet and is also not keen on rice. Turkey is leaner than chicken or hamburger so she prefers turkey.

We must wean off the Prednisone but had already started that at my own Vet's direction. The holistic Vet (very nice lady, very, very nice) also wants Oban to take acidolphous, which we had already started, a chinese herb mixture which has astragaches (sp?) and a lot of other stuff in it and it says it expels wind and damp. And a clay something or other to bind up with and remove toxins, which she will order for us out of our own Vet's which is half the distance. Oh, and continue the digestive enzymes, the Rxzymes.

She also did acupuncture and says Oban's gut is too cold from all the meds he was on. But we are not to feed hot foods, they'd be too hot; turkey is cooler than ground beef. 60:40 ratio turkey to sweet potato in case it helps someone else.

We began to see pooper improvement Friday morning, before our appt. with the holistic Vet. No more fire hose, #3 poops on the chart and looser as the day goes on but no more fire hose. Oban has not needed to go out a couple of times a night either and is only pooping 3 or 4 times a day. 2 or 3 was normal for him before. Hallelujah! I'm almost afraid to write it for fear of jinxing things. Oban loves the new diet.

Oban is still very low on weight and he's weak because of it. He cannot jump up on our bed and he fell over when he tried to chase a ball yesterday. But I threw that ball as a reward for a recall when he was showing unwanted interest in a neighbour's property so, as the saying goes, his spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. We expect with the good signs we are seeing now his flesh will catch up.

Great news. Continued good thoughts for your boy.

I've only seen a fire hose poop once. Thankfully the pooping dog was facing me while sitting in the waiting room at the vet's office, some of the other people were not so lucky.

So so glad you are seeing improvement. I've been worried about your boy. Yay for good poops and holistic vets!

I am so glad he's being weaned off the prednisone. Your boy's immune system is all messed up, and the astragalus will help. It will also help his allergies. When vets follow their training (and it's training, not learning), they automatically prescribe an immune suppressor for the overactive immune system. That does nothing but allow every other opportunistic infection to take over. Astragalus is very very useful as an immune modulator. I give it to Abby for her allergies, she has had NO staph infections, much much less itching, and fewer ear infections. When I run out, and don't give it to her for a bit, is when I start to see some problems return (ears, itching).

I know it's a relief to have one less thing in your life to worry about now. Still sending healing thoughts, good appetite and weight gain for Oban.

Thanks everyone. We do feel encouraged, knock on wood. Spoke to the regular Vet today, he called me, and he is encouraged too and I'm sure feels badly his protocol did not help.

I should have looked up the Chinese medicine herb before I tried to type it here. It's not astragalus. It's agastache and a lot of other things are mixed with it. It's a Canadian company but their website is being revised and I couldn't find anything more out about it. But it is on the web and seems to be of the hyssop or mint family. Huh, have mint growing just by the deck, maybe I could have just given him some. He doesn't like raw mint though, tried to give him some as a breath freshener a couple of times and he won't eat it.
