    We're back at it.

It was a very eventful winter lay-off and not in a good way. But things have settled down and we had anticipated getting back into training like always... toward the end of January. BUT...

The month of January saw Northern Nevada getting an entire years worth of precipitation (normally 5-6 inches) in a single month. A phenomenal amount of snow (200% of normal) is sitting up in the Sierras just waiting to melt and flow down-stream. God willing it doesn't happen in one big warm spell. Then the entire first 10 days of February were rainy. (I don't know where that puts us on our annual precipitation levels... it's getting ridiculous.) Tomorrow we're to have another big storm, and then drizzle for another week.

    It's just been crazy.

But our group got together the last couple of days. We are just doing blind spreads. The dogs are almost as deconditioned as their owners after a 3-4 months off. Though I've been out of town for most of December and early January, when I've been home Rocket Dog and I have gone to the local parks and done handling drills. It was funny when we were up on BLM land, full of sage and tall grass and some brambles. She popped. She never pops! I think it was like she was saying "but, but, but... there's this stuff in the way!!!" After the first two blinds, she sorta remembered what it was all about and she was fine.

Today... she had her mojo back. Unfortunately, that expressed itself with a bit of auto-casting and (dummy me) I had my e-collar cranked down to barely-perceptible.

IF we are not rained out, the group might be out shooting fliers on Saturday. That will really tell the tale. She has not gotten ANYTHING this whole winter unless her obedience has been flawless. Every time she's eaten, it's been a "holding blind drill". She knows her food is on the floor in the kitchen, but she has to walk with me around the corner and lay down. Then she has to heel perfectly into the kitchen... sit with her toes behind my heels... perfectly still and quiet... and then I send her to eat.

I have no idea if it will amount to a hill of beans when she starts seeing birds go down. But I do know, if she doesn't get sent, she'll know why.

It should be an interesting season!

I think all of your general obedience work is really going to pay off for you both!
