    Good dog, bad handler

M and I had much the same experience as the Irish Whistler and TRAD sans a flier. M got a no bird on the first attempt at the triple ( no fliers in Canada). As there were no other dogs to run (the pros were at other stakes) we came right back to the line. She was pretty high by this time. The one judge that I know well said she sure had more spit than my Chant. Any way first bird down is a long mark to the right and as soon as she heard the gun she jumped out about 2 feet I thought she was gone but when the second gun went she sat down again and waited for the middle gun. When I released her she took off like a cut cat and over ran the mark She made a left turn and I thought she was going to switch to the left outside gun but she did a 180 and came back and picked up the short bird. She picked up the left mark clean and then went for long bird. There were two patches of cover that many of the dogs were cheating but she managed to get through the first and hit the inside edge of the second and went back and got the bird with a minor hunt. This got her through the first series. Her land blind was one of the better ones of the day. It was a key hole and many of the dogs were ping ponging in the central part of it and falling down the hill at the end of it. She was carried to the water blind

This where the bad handler comes in. I made the cardinal error of looking at the blind from two angles. The first was down the road from the line. Then from the line while the test dog ran. When I came to the line to run I had the wrong picture in my head and could not find the marker where the blind was. I lined her up and sent her but I thought she was too far to the left (my bad ). If I hadn't given her a quick whistle I probable would have had time to lookup and see that her initial line was good however I didn't and my cast took her away from the blind. After that I continued to keep her too far right. Finally the judge that I know well said you know you're too far right. I stopped her and because he had said I was too far right a turned my head to the left and low and behold there was the marker. I was then able to put her on line and she picked up the bird. I felt like an idiot. She did the job but I certainly didn't. She took every cast I gave her, too bad they were all the wrong ones, at first
She told me I better do a better job next weekend or she will be looking for anew hander.

Sometimes... I don't have even a fig leaf of an excuse. I can sometimes absolutely see the marker... but cannot tell how deep she is. I'll give her a hard back, only to find she was already past it. Or an over... to find out she's 15 feet in front of it. At this point, she has pretty good handling discipline. Chances are pretty good it takes me to screw her blinds up.
