OK. I will give you the video that will show what we're dealing with. I took some at the water's edge... but I warn you, we are not THERE yet. We quickly desensitized in the backyard with food. AND, I will tell you, when she's hysterical to get out of her run. (Using the patented "speak to the hand" gesture of Bill Hillmann, plus just walking away from the kennel gate when she's being crazy.)

SO... here is a very sub-optimal early step at the water's edge. You don't have to watch the whole thing to take note of her range and variety of vocal agony. After about 4 minutes of noise... there was a brief moment when she seemed to have gone from squeeking to panting. I rewarded that... Subsequently, we did it 2 more times, each going quicker from hyper to more self-contained.

Squeek, Chirp, Yip, Whine, Squeek, Squeek, Snort, Chirp - YouTube UGH!!! Labradorks! I told you I hate to video myself!!! This is all your fault!!!

I noticed when I viewed the video that when I turned to throw the bumper into the water, she danced a step or two, watching it go down. I will in the future keep my eye on her.

Tomorrow and Friday we'll be on the Field Trial grounds where there will be shotguns going off in the near distance. I think we will do Hillmann's Traffic Cop out there.

HA!!! Compare and contrast!!!! We went to a Field Trial where there were guns and dogs and ducks and commotion all around her. When I took her aside to work obedience, she came out of the truck ready to romp and stomp, absolutely convinced that she was about to walk to a holding blind and then break on her next live flier.

    Uh, not so much.

She was so high, we had to do a lot of desensitization before we could work on Traffic Cop. We went through that routine twice yesterday, and twice today.

Compare the squeek, yip, chirp, whine, squeek, squeek from previously... to THIS!

There were two squeeks that don't come across on the video. That is where I stopped and walked toward her. We are not where Hillmann wants this stage of Traffic Cop to be. I should be able to touch her without her moving her feet. So, we're not moving forward.

But you can see that in a very short amount of time, she has made progress.

OK... more evolution using Hillmann's methods. No squeeking at all (or chirping, or yipping, whining, moaning, or grunting.) Feet are still. (I do have her on a mat, but still, she could easily dance on it if she wanted to.) I'm touching her without her moving.

A very quiet dog. Sitting on a mat. Feet not moving. - YouTube

We're working on PLACE so we can do send-back marks eventually. We are STILL not moving forward to "Level 2" of Traffic Cop because occasionally, she'll anticipate the send, and will flinch a little bit. So, slow-slow-slow.

*The reason for the milk crate is because she was having trouble visualizing where her PLACE was. Needed a marker of some sort.
