    Canadian National Amateur

Spent a couple of days watching the dogs at the Canadian Amateur National. They started with 51 dogs that were very well qualified. Eleven went to the line for the 10th series,a very difficult water quad. The eventual winner was Pilkington`s Ruby Blues Day owned and Handled by Ken Crosby, and what a girl she is. She has already produced a litter that has 6 pups running in Amateur and Open. This was one of those breedings that there was no pick of the litter. They were all great prospects and are proving themselves at trial after trial. Unfortunately there can be no repeat of this breeding as the stud has passed away, but I am sure that Ruby will produce another great litter with the proper match.

The North Bay Club that hosted this event sure put on a great time. We attended the fish fry on Wednesday night which not only had delicious food but an outstanding silent auction as well. It was great fun. The next morning the group was busy making breakfast for all in attendance. All of this is done with volunteers from the various field trial clubs. It is not true that field trialers are stand offish and not very welcoming. We could not have been treated any better. This group really needs a pat on the back for running a well organized and friendly event. I am sure they are looking forward to a well deserved rest after the months of preparations that went into this National.

Sounds like a great time. Think once we retire we’ll be travelling around more to events like this.

What a great story. This is what FT (and I'd like to think HT) should be doing... improving the breed. Think about what will happen over time as these genes become dispersed and mixed with other great lines.

And, I must tell you, our club runs both a big double header HT and a FT. The HT is such an intense thing (we run three Master groups... think about that, a double header so there are 6 sets of judges not to mention the workers, etc.) I am not going to say our HT is unfriendly or unwelcoming. When the day is over we kick back and have fun. But the actual HT is crazy intense. Somehow, the FT'ers are way more laid back and love to welcome a lone HT person who volunteers to carry lunches around. They invite me to sit almost on top of the line, answer my dumb questions, etc.

TuMicks you hit the nail on the head. Someone to carry lunches and do all the crazy running around that needs to be done is worth their weight in gold. At our last FT a lot of the HT people did not show up so on Sunday I found myself running M and making lunches and snacks. Thank heavens the judges set up a rotation. M was 4th dog so I ran her marks then with the rotation I had time to run up to the house make the snacks go back and run her blinds then make the lunches and go back run the water marks. I think I was so tired that I didn't have the energy to be nervous and it paid off with the win.
If you belong to a club that runs both HT and FT then everyone in the club needs to pitch in for both events.

3 flights of Master would be crazy busy. Do they cut off at 25 per flight or are there more?
How do you accomodaate all those judges, it must cost the clubs a fortune.

We work really, really hard to raise money. We do a huge raffle some sponsors (like they donate a Zinger Winger and the electronics... we have a sponsor who donates a very pricey 3 day hunt, another member donates a bunch of really pricey super duper vintage wines, the club members are all tasked with making donations to the raffle so it might contain generous Cabela's gift certificates, etc.) We usually but not always raise about what it costs to put on the event.

And the HT folks work really hard. Our FT people are a lot less organized, but a FT has a Derby, Qual and Am and Open... They might have a lot of entries, but at the end of the day... it's just 4 stakes. But folks seems to enjoy themselves and I really enjoyed watching the different dog work.

CONTGRATS on your win!!! Wow. Love the color blue!
