Red face Labs that point or lock up?

Anyone got labs that do upland too?

My Labrador gundog TRAD is cross-trained to hunt for both waterfowl and upland birds. TRAD does not "point" nor does he "lock up". TRAD is a "flushing" Lab who quarters back and forth while working birds. TRAD is steady to wing, shot, and fall (he sits upon flushing a bird and remains seated and steady while he marks the fall, remaining steady until sent by command to make the retrieve).

I really enjoy hunting both waterfowl and upland birds with TRAD. We often concentrate on upland birds during the closed period for waterfowl in between "split seasons".

Great pictures! I don't hunt, but Charlie does point.

Cinder is a flusher that quarters back and forth too. I'll whistle once and point to an area I want her to check, then again to go back to quartering. Once the Pheasant is shot, she retrieves and holds it down at my feet until I pick it up. With ducks, she just drops 'em at my feet. She's figured out which ones can run. lol

It's a bit too bad my OH stopped hunting after our English Springer Spaniel because Jet, our first Lab, naturally quartered, flushed and stayed in range. The ESS worked on waterfowl, waiting in a blind and retrieving on big water, as well as upland.

Bacon is a flusher, and had his first upland hunts this past year. He also did grouse for the first time!

If they can do waterfowl they can do upland. They don't need to point for upland. It's a bonus if they do, but not necessary. Quarter & flush. Easy training and fun.

My boy, Shadow, does both Waterfowl and Upland, but really enjoys upland more. Though he hit 11 years old this January, last fall was his best year hunting pheasants in terms of the number of birds he put up and retrieved for me. He even caught 3 birds on his own last season, grabbing them before they flushed. Obviously, he is a flushing dog and I can always tell when he is hot on a bird and exactly when he is about to flush a bird (in the seconds before they fly). He is a Good, close working dog... and any dog doing that job is a joy to hunt over.
