    Cinder's First Pheasant Hunt

Cinder had her first Pheasant hunt this week. She's 18 months old now and I couldn't be more pleased with her. We did scent training with a drag and a pheasant tail in the months leading up to the hunt and despite wanting to air scent in the beginning, she's learnt to ground scent and did a great job.

Congratulations on your Girl's successful first hunt.
I hope that you have a decade (plus a few more years) of pleasurable hunting over her.
Was the hunt on a preserve or do you have wild pheasants in your area? It doesn't matter in terms of the hunting experiece, I am simply curious about pheasant populations in your part of Canada. I am in NY and there are no longer populations of wild birds here.

Thanks for all the nice replies. I was on the board last year and posted about Cinder's first duck hunts, but I guess the site got restarted, so I had to join again.

Here are a few pics from her first 3 duck hunts when she was 7 months old.

It was on released birds on a ranch. I wanted to make sure she would have birds to learn on. We don't have a lot of wild pheasants here on the west coast (British Columbia) anymore. You'll occasionally see one, but there are too many coyotes now. I would like to get down to Montana next year for wild birds.

Thanks for the reply about Wild Pheasant Populations in your area. Populations all over the Northeastern US states are down to almost no birds. I am in Western NY and haven't seen a wild bird in at least 3 years. There was a small wild population on my land, but they are gone. Coyotes, Hawks, Fox, etc., all are issues here as well. It is a shame that these birds have dissappeared.
The released birds are just as much fun to watch the dog work, flush, then, hopefully, retrieve after you take the shot. I had my dog out last year with my young Nephew for youth hunt and Shadow put up 8 birds and all were missed shots. Finally hit one and dog didn't get skunked on retrieves.
I agree too that having birds there for the young dog to work and experience is a great way to go and have an enjoyable day in the field. I wish you continued success with your girl and hope that you get to make that trip out to Montana.
