    Retriever Training in a Drought

It's tough and very depressing. The only water around here is pretty much what comes out of a tap. I am not sure but that we are going to have to take some road trips and pay for the privilege of using a pond some place many miles from us.

That sucks. I used to have a pond within in walking distance of my home. Recently, moved and I miss that pond.

These dogs love to swim. You can even tell looking at their musculature that swimming fills them out, builds up their chest muscles. Wish I had a swimming pool. Then we could all swim laps.

That's a shame. They so love the water.

Finding water to train on is hard even at the best of times. Your drought situation is very concerning to say the least. We are fortunate to have good water in our area living very close to Georgian Bay on Lake Huron we take water for granted. I hope your weather patterns change soon and you will get some relief.
How did Rocket Dogs surgery go? Hope all is well.

Would you even be allowed to fill the pool if you had one? From what I read or heard on the news, it sounds like they are getting pretty strict about water usage.

Yes... maybe if I had enough money and not too much intelligence. There has been rational water policy in NV over the years (well... rational compared to other states that shall remain nameless) and everyone is metered and pays for the privilege of enjoying their water (or wasting it). We have also built reservoirs so we are not under the dire threat of having no drinking water.

Just got a storm front that came through. We may get 12" of snow at the highest elevations though that will make little impact when the snow pack is 12% of normal.

We had very light snow this year, which is unusual. I live in Oregon and we along with California are probably the "Greenest" states in the US. I work for an Engineering firm and we design LEED Platinum buildings. It's pretty common place on large commercial buildings to collect rainwater, treat it and re-use it to serve toilets, urinals, laundries, cooling towers, irrigation, etc. Do you see much of that in NV?

That sounds really interesting. I have not seen that up here. Perhaps they have something like that in the Southern (i.e., Vegas) area... however, though their need is greater, they probably don't get enough rain/precip to make it practical. I am not sure it would be any more practical here... we almost totally depend upon the snow-pack for all of our water and it's usually abundant enough. Sometimes, it's way too abundant. Think Donner party.

In the early 2000's we had a blizzard that blew across the Sierras (dumping huge, huge amounts of snow) and dropped into the valley and blanketed Reno with about 3' of snow on Christmas Eve. (That almost never happens.) Then ANOTHER front came through and did the same thing only 4' fell in Reno on New Year's Eve. Then that spring we had terrible flooding that went into casino room floors downtown.

Interesting factoid: Do you know what dealers do in casinos if there is a sudden power outage and the lights go out? They literally throw themselves on their tables because just one or two missing chips could represent hundreds of dollars.

I too will have to deal w/ irrigation rationing this year for the first time in 10 yrs. We were told last week that we'd get 60% of normal, and by the end of the week they decreased that to 54%. I'm in Yakima, and have only Jr water rights. Fortunately I have a deep well for all domestic use but we can't use that for our crops. Living in a desert definitely limits water training w/ the dogs too. Today a friend/ pup owner from the tri cities is coming up and we're meeting at a pond out in the boonies for a swim / training session but it only offers limited set ups. The next better places are 90+ miles. Otherwise, it's a trip over the Cascades to the hunt test sites ($15-20 / dog fee to use the grounds). I've volunteered to help w/ the test next weekend just to get my newest youngsters on site and hopefully in some water after the test, but I did find this little remote lake out in the Basin this past week while on a work run. The pups got wet, got to play in a safe area, and that was all I was asking for. Other than the ticks that is.... I wish there was some tick juice for us people as I pulled one out of my hair at my next work stop! Anne
