She just wants to play. She isn't challenging you. If im not mistaken, she isn't being used hunting or anything so whats the harm letting her play the way she wants?
All of a sudden my gal, Hope, has decided she wants to play a bit of tug a war with her bumper instead of just dropping it into my hand automatically. I have only had her 3 months & she has always just nicely placed it in my hand.
I never engage her when she does this. It is a new kind of bumper made out of the fire hose. It's a different shape, wider. is that the reason maybe, or is she just challenging me.

What is your training objective? Can't remember. Sorry. Are you planning on hunting her?
Not planning to hunt with her. she does have her junior hunting title though. I guess I just don't want her to lose the good training she had before I got her. I have only had her 3 months. My last dog got away with murder because I was not the leader or whatever. I do plan some more obedience starting this month & then onto a sport of some kind. Not sure which.
Hope is pushing the limits. Continue with not letting her engage you. Step back and offer her a treat in trade for the bumper. You can slowly phase out the treats. For having her three months, she is just really showing her personality and at the same time feeling you out. Keep up the training.

If she had been trained to deliver to hand, what was her word for releasing the bird (or retrieving object)... "drop" or "leave it?
You mentioned "tug of war" but also stated that you don't engage with her when she does that. So, I guess you know not to pull on it, which would, of course be the exact opposite of what you should do.
thanks for the help. if she doesn't let it go, I just turn my back to her or just let go of my end. Then she gives it to me. I am not engaging in it. I do not know her command. I tried to ask the owner through email a lot of things but she never got back to me. I am planning to call her with some questions. I just got confused when someone said "she just wants to play" & I thought maybe that was OK at times. anyway: I'm a work in progress. she is a great little girl my Hope
I'd put the bumpers away for training and fetch/play with something else.

Yes, we never play tug with bumpers (although we do use them for fun retrieves). We do however occasionally use tug games as a reward in Obedience, but our dogs know to GIVE on command and if they don’t, the GIVE is reinforced and the game is ended. We control when and what they are allowed to tug on, but we do allow it.
