Congratulation. Hailey looks very intense. Stick with it you will enjoy watching her development. It always amazes me seeing what these dogs are capable of learning.

Just wanted to say what a great summer we're having training wise.
Hailey has been doing cold doubles with no problem. I have run her on one triple just for kicks. I think her steadiness needs more work though before I do that again. She remembered all her marks no problem, we just had some obedience issues bc she wanted to GO NOW and then on her 2nd bird she didn't go where I sent her but tried to veer off to the bird she wanted to pick up. I recalled her and she swung back around and went where she should have gone, but it wasn't our best work.

She's been doing long singles at 200+yds, which isn't a big deal in field trials, but I think for hunt tests is good. She is such an excellent marker, and generally takes a straight line to the bird.
Exposed her to live birds, since we didn't know to do that as a puppy. She was slightly aggressive with that first one and I cringed. I see the necessity in her being able to pick up a winged bird, but the training part of it made me very sad. Thankfully she didn't need much encouragement. Have shot some live flyers for her and she's done excellent with those.

We've started on handling. Done the 3-leg lining pattern and now we're on to Simple Baseball. Her sit-to-whistle has finally started to connect as she gets further away from me. I wasn't sure we'd ever get it, lol. I am having so much fun. Our biggest challenge is just the self-restraint getting to the line, and a large part of that I'm sure is just me needing to be firmer.
We had a trap shoot over the weekend and she generally likes to run out and chase the clays as they fall, but I made her sit at the line with the shooters. Which was even more "cruel" bc someone else's Lab was running around out there. She wasn't happy, but she didn't break. Super excited to take her out for duck season this Fall.

    Congratulations!!!

Hailey is a fine looking girl. She sounds like she'll be a hoot to train and run.

After getting her SHR I was going to skip Juniors, but I know a handful of people with young dogs going to the Backwater Fall Hunt Test in 2 weeks, so Hailey and I entered this morning. We're so new to the hobby that the extra experience can only be beneficial.
Super excited. I'm hoping to see improvements from the training we've done this summer.

I think you have made a good decision going for the junior. It will give you more time on the line as a handler and Hailey more experience handling the excitement of the test situation. There is a big step from started to seasoned in HRC and from junior to senior in the AKC and CKC tests. This will give you time to work on blinds, diversions and multiple marks. We are in the process from stepping up from junior (derby ) to qualifying and amateur. M has a good foundation but the higher concepts in blind work really need a lot more attention. The other day we had a long session on running past a short hot blind (one with birds at it ) to a long blind. It was not an easy concept for her but once we got through it the first time and rested she did it well the second time. However the session did make me take a step back and revise how we will do it the next time.

Had a great weekend with some awesome dogs (and their people) and came home with our first 2 JH passes. Some issues I had thought resolved (haven't seen them all summer in training) re-reared their ugly heads though. So we do have some obedience issues to address - which we will be working on immediately. The plan is to go to KY the end of October and hopefully finish our JH title.
I am so blessed to have this dog. She has shown an amazing level of talent (I was told, out of the 40+ dogs that ran JR on Saturday, some people thought by far she was the most talented dog). I don't know about that, but I am extremely flattered that someone felt that way.
The only thing "holding her back" is me, but that's okay. We're going to enjoy the ride we get for all it's worth.

Congratulations and good luck in KY. The more experience you and she get on the line the better it will be for moving up. We have all been in the situation where something we thought solved rears its head at a test. The whole atmosphere is different from training and the dogs pick up on it. I have heard more than one handler say " he/she has never done that before". The pro we use always says, " there are the dogs that have broke and then there are the dogs that have yet to break." Be prepared. Mine broke at the last test.
