    Took a dip

Took my first dip of the season today. Stepped down to help a young golden and stepped to far and was into the pond up to my armpits. Golden loved it. By the time we were finished had her leaping into the water after the bumpers. Water was warm so I now know it is ok for the dogs to do some long swims.
On another note glad to hear that RD came through her surgery AOK.

That'll be us next weekend, 1st weekend of water work!
introduced one of the pups in our training group to water this past Friday in my pool. Her aunt and Scout went in 1st to show her how its done, she couldnt resist the tennis ball her aunt had, and that did it! just 2 short swims to get her used to it, then we'll see what she's like in the pond next week.

Yikes! Are you sure it was "warm"? For me that means the water is more than 75 degrees! A week ago we were doing swim-by on our last remaining bit of water and I really didn't want to do more than about 6 trips across a short section of the pond. She was shivery afterwards, though I don't know if that was excitement or the joy of being rubbed down with a towel, or if it was the cold water. Since she has zero body fat, I'm guessing it was mostly the latter.

Water around here never gets to 75 degrees. It is usually real hard till the second week of April, that's when most of the ice is gone. I always feel sorry for the first geese that get back in the spring. The ponds are still frozen and they kick up a real racket. Almost as if they are cursing the weather. Once the water hits 55 the dogs start training for real. They are in and out on their own before that.

Our rule of thumb is 60 degrees and even then, it's one and done... especially if the air temperature is low or the wind is high (not at all uncommon here.) My older dog has no, none, zero, nadda, zilch undercoat. All I can tell you is that her breeder lives in a pretty hot area of central CA so maybe that is part of the reason. So I watch her pretty closely. She would get too cold more quickly than the other dogs. On the other hand, Bridge is something of a delicate flower, drama queen who will actually look at you on the line and say..."but... it's cold!"

My oh my... RD is such a change from what I'm used to. She's one I will have to watch because I don't think she'll quit even if hyper or hypo-thermic.

But right now... I'll take ANY water! ANY temperature! Ach!!! This drought is making us crazy.
