Let me stipulate that my dogs are accustomed from puppy-hood to being outside in a kennel run when we are not home. So that was not new to any of them. Also, training and boarding situations may not necessarily be comparable. At the particular place where my dogs go, there are people cruising the grounds constantly hosing and scooping and exercising dogs in addition to the training sessions. They aren't just warehoused.

It is absolutely ideal to train and work your own dog. But there may be things the dog needs to learn that you can't teach him.

I actually wish i had a trusted pro nearer me. My girls also would LOVE to "get birds" every day and it's good for them to learn to work for someone other than you. And really, if you have to board at ($$ whatever the going rate is now per day), I know mine would much rather board where they got worked. Much better than sitting around bored, chewing on a bone on concrete or whatever. That would make some of our dogs get stressed far worse.

Thanks again guys! I'm going to call the trainer and set up some dates. A guy in my club put it this way saying don't let your ego get in the way of "oh I trained him myself". Do what's best for the dog and that would be someone well versed in collar conditioning and force fetching because in the long run it'll be less stressful on the pup and me.

Your friend has given you good advice. Check the pro out, go watch him train a few dogs if you have time. I have been around along time and may be getting a bit jaded but I have seen far too many dogs that people think they have FF or collar conditioned and it is the dog that suffers the most.
