Just got an update, he finished collar FF and he's back in the field doing work now. Said he's marking extremely well and he has stopped spitting the bumper out upon return. He's now working on casting drills with him.
So of you guys who've sent their dog to a trainer... Did the dog ever come back different? Him being gone so long it's really starting to wear on me, i feel like a wuss lol but he was always lovey dovey with my GF, would lay with her on the couch when she was sick and always be wanting to be with us.
When he comes back should I expect him to not recognize us? And think his lovey dovey attitude will be different? I had him for 4mo from 7 weeks and then he will have been gone 3 months.
I don't know, but I'd be worried about the same things. When does he come back?
Assuming it's a good pro... I can assure you... with absolute certainty... your dog will be as affectionate as ever, if not more so when he returns home. If you have a good pro, he/she will want to work with you and the dog together so that you know how the dog has learned to do his job, and you'll be using the same commands and have the same standards.
When you return home with your dog, he'll have increased confidence and work better with you and your GF because he'll know what you want... and he'll have the confidence that he knows exactly how to please you.
Most folks know what Ram Jet Rocket Dog has been like since puppyhood. Wild and crazy. She has become much calmer, more civilized and altogether a better dog in the field and around the house after some rigorous training. We are now doing doggy school working obedience with treats (sort of what most people do with puppies) and she thinks she's died and gone to heaven. So nothing she's experienced in pro-training has dampened her spirits. She's become an all-around better dog.

I will second what TuMicks has written. You will find that your dog not only remembers you but will recognize your voice when you first get to the pros. As to changes I don't think so. As a pup M always went to the food bag and got a mouthful of kibble to bring into the livingroom and nibble. She was only home about an hour when she went and got her snack, jumped up on the couch and proceeded to eat. She drops the mouthful and then eats one kibble at a time. She now shares her snacks with the neighbours young dog that spends 90% of her time with us.

Awesome thanks guys! We feel a lot better now. I wasn't so worried because being his handler he still would have been attached to me. I was just making sure him going from a home life to a kennel life wouldn't ruin his lovey dovey attitude with the GF. She gets all torn up in tears when she sees pictures of him or when we start talking about him.
Try, as much as possible, to get GF to buy in to the new standards. I will be honest that LOTS of folks train dogs for a living and have spouses who spoil their dogs terribly... knowing full well that it's better for the dog that everyone is on the same page.
But, in the field... as long as you're doing what the pro shows you, you'll be very pleased as all get out with the outcome.

My Shih Tzu got sent away to be trained but and I was considered doing it for hunting training for Teller but it's so expensive around here (in addition to being far away), the average price is $650 a month and they recommend 6 months. I guess that's not expensive considering boarding, feeding, training, etc. but for that money I can buy the training program, dummies, decoys, e collar, bird scent, etc. and do it myself but with a better bonding experience. I'm sure the time will fly by though and I bet your girlfriend will be glad when she sees the result.
6mo?! Holy cow....... And my best advice is to find a retriever club in your area and train with them. They'll have everything you need and the fee really isn't all that much. My club was extremely inviting and they let me start bringing boomer to the training days at just 10weeks. After going to the first training day I was invited to peoples personal training grounds to train boomer and they also were like we have pigeons you should bring him up and see how he does.
