Close call! As a teen I stepped on a ground hornets nest and got nailed by quite a few. They are nasty.
We were training on the swim-by pond to day working on longer entries and staying in the water on the return with a friends young Toller. He looked like he was going to cheat the shore on the return so I stepped down onto the edge of the pond. As I did I put my foot into a hole and the earth gave way a little. When I turned to step back up onto the bank I noticed that the hole I had stepped in was a ground hornets nest and were they mad. Thankfully the earth I had pushed into the hole had slowed their exit so I hightailed it along the shore losing a shoe in the mud ( I didn't stop to retrieve it). Ground hornets are particularly nasty and really aggressive at this time of year. My husband was stung several times last week when he was trimming around the front pond. They seem to like to locate near the water.
You never know what you are going to run into training so I keep a very well stocked first aid kit with us.

I am very allergic to bees and really afraid of them. The feeling of your throat closing up is terrifying. People look at me like I am nuts when I go running from just one! I hope you were not stung too badly and I would be worried about the dogs working in that area until you can get rid of them.

I got nailed about five times while walking Sophie when she was a pup. I'd been stung before, and never had a reaction, bit this time I needed to take benadryl to calm the reaction to the stings. Glad you got out ok!
This hive has proven to be really problematic. When my husband went to investigate he found that this nest is huge with at least 3 entrance. He has treated it 3 times now and still is finding evidence of activity. It is in a bad spot as we do a lot of work around that pond. I don't want anyone or their dogs being stung so the wasps have to go.
Make sure you spray after dark when they have all returned for rhe night. Saturate each of the exit holes well with wasp / hornet spray.

If you can get it up there, try Tempo. It's animal safe (actually restaurants use it) and does a great number on the hard to kill things (wasps, ants, spiders, etc). I just noticed that Revival Animal is even carrying it now, but I can get it from my local Wilbur-Ellis ag chem dealer probably most reasonably priced. Just takes 16ml / gallon for the hardest to kill critters. Anne

Rand has been out sprayed the holes with a foam product that works very well but he was running low. We picked up some more on Sunday so he will check again tonight and if there is no activity he will try to locate the final entrance. We think it is under a large cedar tree. I really want them gone as I need that pond to do some handling drills on.
Our weather is supposed to break tonight so we will be able to start training again. It has just been too bloody hot. We northerners can't take 90+ temperatures for more than a day or two. This has been going on for over a week, it's just not right.
