    New to upland hunting

I'm thinking of getting my 2 year old lab trained for upland hunting. I'm worried about having her away for 4 months and boarded. She has never been boarded at all and away from us. She is spoiled rotten and I'm afraid I'm being selfish and cruel by possibly doing this. Am I overeacting? Alot of people tell me that the dogs love to train to hunt but i don't have alot of experience in the training methods used. Can any one let me know if I'm worrying to much or is it reasonable to be concerned. She is my baby and I don't want to harm her for my own selfish reason.

I, personally, would never do board and train. Besides putting your dog in someone else's hands, I really enjoy learning and the bond that comes from training your own dog is priceless. Additionally, all the time I see dogs that came from the kennel trained for thousands not respond to the handler. I know that board and train comes with lessons, but that doesn't seem like enough in some cases. Why not just take lessons and do it yourself?

I guess it is a time thing. I work round the clock on a rotating schedule and it's hard to have alot of set days to train her and get In The Field. But I agree totally that I think if I could do it it would be well worth the time. I really like the place I was thinking about going to and they have a great reputation but like I said I'm very attached her and would miss her dearly

It's a tough decision whether to send your dog away for training, and all trainers are not created equal. Once you get your post count up (over 10 I think) you can send/receive PM's. IRISHWHISLTER frequents this board, he lives in Connecticut and knows a lot of people in the area up there, so he may be able to give you some help finding someone. He's also pretty passionate about upland hunting and is very knowledgable about training for this.

One of our members, Irishwistler, does a lot of training dogs for hunting, his own and others'. Hopefully he'll weigh in with his thoughts on this. You could try looking at some of his posts and see his 2 dogs, Trad and Mac, in action. Maybe check the photo section for those. I don't know if you need a certain number of posts to be able to search, but you could look around and see. I'm thinking there's also a gun dog forum somewhere online that might be helpful.
