I don't consider obedience trainers, as in competition, the same as pet dog trainers. We have a ton of field groups locally. Perhaps that is geographically different. And perhaps what I see is area specific? Or perhaps you are desensitized to it? Just like the video you showed, you did not see the cowed dog or did not think it was anything to be concerned about, whereas I picked up on it right away.

And, to answer you question about rescue dogs? How many of them do I suppose were trained positively? Zero. Other than dogs in rescue due to death or illness, dogs put in rescue, in my experience, are not trained at all, mostly just corrected, and inconsistently at that. When the cute little puppies become dogs the owners resort to corrections and calling the dog "hard-headed" and "disobedient". Where do you get "legions" from? Because in the nearly 20 years that I have been involved in rescue, including the 5+ years I was doing intakes, temperament testing and fostering dozens of these dogs, I saw none. The rescue I was involved with took in 75% or more owner surrender dogs so I spoke directly with the owners and I know how they trained (or did not train). Most of the dogs only walked on prong collars (that would not be positive training, by the way). The vast majority of owners were not educated in dog behavior or training methods; they just did what their parents did. A small handful of them took their puppies to puppy-k and that was the extend of training classes or any type of professional direction. I do not recall even one owner surrender that had heard of clicker training. There is no danger in non-force training. There is danger in lack of consistency, training, exercise and mental stimulation. If a dog is out of control, it's because it was not trained at all, regardless of method. So, using your theory, we have an out of control dog due to incorrect force-free training by a well meaning owner, and someone gives it up. So, why can't we turn the dog around using force free training the right way? At least of you mess up force-free training the likelihood that the dog will be abused is pretty slim! One less thing to have to overcome.

You are well aware of my definition of force in dog training. If you think I am forcing my dog to do anything, you don't know how I train. If you want to understand the way I train, I'm happy to forward you some books and such.

Honestly Labradorks, I maybe would have listened to you if you would have PM'd me and did a side note trying to explain to me the force free way. I wouldn't have done it, no offense, but I would have had a conversation with you about it. You knew what you did with your post, you just wanted to start an argument.

Off on the tangent. I use force in training. I only train with people whose use of force is compatible with mine. I don't like to train with people who I feel are abusive to their dogs. I also don't like to train with people who baby their dogs. They won't apply pressure when needed. I feel that I am fair with my dogs. But if we are truthful none of this is their idea. We all do it for our own reasons. That said I am open to new ideas. But I am sceptical about what can be done in advanced field work without pressure

God bless you Labradorks. You continue to conflate "force" training with abuse.
