    What is a "Lady Handler"?

A friend sent me a flyer for a "lady handler" seminar. There was no explanation, just the sign-up form with what you get for your money. The two women giving it are judges.

What is lady handling? Is it field training for women? When I see the term "lady handling" I think of handling, like taking your dog to the line, basically handling your trained dog, not training a dog.

    Any insight?

Oooh, "lady handling" could very easily be a double entendre, couldn't it? I suppose what they're trying to say is that this is a seminar about handling a dog in the field that is not open to gentlemen. Maybe the flier was not put together by an English major. Oh well.

More generally, I've heard the "lady" modifier more or less dropped once the "lady" and her dog starts qualifying (or winning/placing if its FT's) more consistently than the "gentlemen" do.

I googled the term and most of what came back was women showing their skills as a handler.

I didn't get much out of copy and pasting the term and didn't see much about the judges. And yeah, I got a giggle out of it, too.

I think I am going to pass.

I have known a number of women over the years that I have come to have great respect for as both trainers and as K9 handlers. Perhaps I am missing something as to why a handler seminar would need to be gender specific? It seems to me that a good handler is a good handler and their gender has very little to do with it. Perhaps this is more of a marketing strategy to draw a targeted grouping in for instruction $$$? JMHO.

Yeah, the term Lady is what's throwing me. I am a woman but don't really think of myself as a Lady. But then, maybe I don't know the jargon of that specific specialty and it wouldn't seem as archaic to them as it does to me. And for me and my dogs, wrangler is probably more accurate than handler anyway.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Am I missing something? It's a handling seminar for women given by women.
