The pheasant shoot I worked at for 2 seasons in the UK had a hard and fast rule, no shots at rabbits/hares, and depending on the drive nothing below a certain height. The head game keeper didn't mess around with these rules, and would send off any offenders. There were several times I and my fellow beaters and picker uppers got peppered with shot. I was always hyper vigilent when we were driving towards the guns.

I never saw a dog get show, but I heard many tales of it happening. Glad you and Miss RD got through with no extra holes.

My best friend's husband was one of the gunners. As you may know, the AKC does have some pretty strict standards for gunners. But our Hunt Test Committee (I don't think there is a better one in the country) is ALL about safety. Whether it's AED's at every stake, prepping marshals about emergency procedures, inservice training for the kids working the popper guns, and careful selection of judges... everything begins and ends with safety. I just saw those gun barrels swinging up and around and freaked out. Probably at no time were we in real danger.

Interestingly, the last 3 HT's we've had medical emergencies requiring that people be transported to the hospital. Once it was dehydration, once an infected wound (acquired prior to the event) in a diabetic that began looking very bad, and this year a neurological issue. Just weird. But everyone is very schooled about what to do, who to call, and when something happens, everyone just seamlessly jumps in the gap to keep things rolling. It is amazing how people will put their shoulder to the wheel and volunteer when things start to go dirty side up.

I can't say enough about the club and the folks in leadership.

Yikes! i think i'd instinctively step in front, and likely grab the dog and crouch down! silly, i know, but the brain doesn't always take the time to reason things out...(the gunners won't fire back toward the line...the gunners are all people i know and trust, they're not going to shoot me or my dog, etc) Wow, what a thing to see from RD's perspective! was she kind of crouching, or was she about to launch herself up at that bird?

I had Scout at work and we took a walk back behind the hangars. there's forest/bush and a couple fields, we went thru a bit of forest which opens out to a small enclosed grassy field. he was trotting out ahead of me and just as we got to the open area, a flock of turkeys were on the ground and wisely decided to get back up into the trees. don;t you know the one bird does its takeoff run right at him and launches just over his head! he hit the ground and somehow managed to get turned around and leaping up after that bird all in one motion... i wondered what he'd do if that happened again. He's a big boy, but i don't know how well he'd do trying to bring one of those turkeys down...

sounds like your club has lots of good experienced folks doing the planning.
