    Canada Geese

It was really hot today. So we went to a neighborhood park where there is a large man-made lake. (There are leash laws... not kosher to have the dogs off leash. But heck, mine are absolutely under control. Plus we had the whole park almost to ourselves). Anyhow... I walked way around the lake put out an orange bumper, walked back, got Rocket Dog off the truck. I set her down maybe 15 yards from the shore and lined her up for it and yelled "BACK".

We don't have big water or out-to-sea blinds here. So this was new to her. It took one or two back casts until she got the idea that she needed to go WAAaaaaay over there. But she was game. I was letting her roll when a long string of Canada geese started cruising past RD's bow (so to speak.) You could tell she wasn't sure what she was supposed to do... I let her figure it out. She didn't veer off her line but I think she tread water a bit to let them get past her.

    It was funny.

The geese here are quite used to the dogs in their territory. I have seen momma goose and all her goslings trail after a dog running a blind. They would follow along behind and then when the dog turned they would get out of the way until the dog passed them again and then start to follow. However, they can be tricky. The first time my very first dog encounter geese on a lake they lured her out to sea. They would take turns coming close then fly off a little way when Woodie went for them. They lured her half way across the lake before she gave up and came in.Geese I don't mind but I won't let the swans stay as they will attack the dogs.

I asked hubby. He thinks he saw some at Lake Davis (N. CA big reservoir) once upon a time. But I've never seen any around here or any of our training sites. I'll have to ask my friends who hunt where they are.

Bacon loves keeping the geese off my Grammy's lawn. They have a serious goose problem, and Bacon just chases them away.

We have tons of them here at our local park. Chloe likes to chase them when on land but ignores them in the water. Sometimes when I am throwing a bumper for her, they swim over to see what is going on. We joke that she is a “New Jersey Goose Tolling Retriever”.
