Begin in a minor key, aye? Then the chorus, pick up tempo and modulate to major?

Should the teacher suddenly take these perhaps awkward moments to embark on an unanticipated teaching experiment?

Come on, folks. Teachers are busy enough.
I just want to point out that as a teacher, healthcare worker (I know there are other categories too) you (and I) are Mandated Reporters of suspected abuse, so you had better take time out of your busy day to report such.

So this list of "scenarios" vary in intensity, from a legal standpoint, abuse, drug dealing; to non-issue subjects such as two gay parents, or their sister is gay; to medium heft issues such as, hunger, a divorce or a death in the family, which are impromptu teachable moments. These are social, and cultural issues that are, or should be, covered in certain curriculums.

Mandated reporters interestingly include sworn members of the law enforcement
community. Take note Prof. Abulafia, we are not the intellectual lowbrows that certain academic elitists assume us to be.

I mentionned this thread to my OH and his question was, at what age is it legal to shoot skeet in the state your grandson was in? If it's legal at 11 then does a teacher have the right to forbid showing it in class?

ETA: Perhaps I should have been more clear. I meant ban a picture showing someone engaged in an activity that is legal?

Yes. A teacher / school system can ban many legal things. My school banned chewing gum, miniskirts, tank tops, peanut products (now, not when I was in school), and so on. I graduated high school before Columbine, but a lot of schools have had similar restrictions on guns / weaponry since at least then. Maybe it's not the most effectively solution, but it seems like a blanket policy in a situation where a lot of nuance / time (ergo money) isn't available. Where I live (California), public school systems are already stretched too thin trying to get their kids to pass tests and onto the next grade to also have to take responsibility for gun education.

And FWIW, a lot of gun violence in schools has been perpetrated by mentally unstable children of all races and class. It's not just "gangbangers" who are part of the problem.

I concur that gun related crime is perpetrated across a wide spectrum of race and class strata, some by mentally unstable individuals and other incicents by those having the mental capacity to pre-plan at a highly organized albeit twisted level of thought. Either way you consider the matter, it does not go away by sticking our collective heads in the sand and ignoring the matter. There are many examples of non-traditional subjects being addressed by the educational system as is reflective of trends within our contemporary culture, so why choose to wallow in ignorance?
