It was, I believe, the principle's policy. I am not sure what other middle schools do. However, the High School down the road has a rifle team and students can letter in marksmanship. It's probably not a school district policy to treat responsible gun use as a dirty and shameful practice.

Vis. arming teachers or staff: I don't believe anyone has suggested teachers MUST carry weapons. The issue has been whether teachers may exercise a constitutional right while at work. Now, I understand that any employee is subject to the terms of their employment and no one exercises their right to free speech (for example) by annoying customers or cursing at co-workers. Allowing guns (or not) in the hands of licensed, trained staff people should be a subject of community-wide debate and discussion. Putting the "public" back into public schools, so to speak.

So far, the University of Texas has not broken down into chaos and bloodshed since the institution of campus carry. There is a counter-intuitive factor with regard to licensed conceal carry that may explain why. (1) Having a permit actually inhibits swagger. That is to say that "brandishing" a weapon is against the law. Break the law... lose your permit. End of story. If a permit is issued for concealed carry, it is to carry a weapon concealed. (2) Those with a permit, have something (a very important-to-them something) to lose with bad behavior. They are less likely to go looking for trouble, or to respond impetuously when trouble comes to them. I cannot know for certain, because the whole notion of campus carry is new. But I rather think that the average drunken frat boy is more concerned about being a drunken frat boy, than he is about being armed. We will see. The jury is still out.

Perhaps I'm trying (for whatever reason) to communicate across cultures. But there it is. My grandson is very disingenuously enamored of hitting targets at which he's aiming... whether it's with some high velocity lead, an arrow, or a baseball. He doesn't give a rip about the politics of it. It's just too bad that adults get their knickers in a knot about it all.
