I hope you got some training on using an e-collar! They are not something that should be used without proper training.

Any regular collar I use the two finger rule. Two fingers must be able to fit between the dogs collar and his neck - minimum. Not sure about e-collars.
That is a shame. I have only had need of an e-collar for one bad behavior. Maxx was going nuts wanting to chase the Amish horse and buggies, a disaster if he succeeded. His trainer came out and worked with us, nipped that bad behavior right in the bud! I would never have attempted this on my own, I am sure I would have made a mess of the entire experience.

You should at least get the Mike Lardy Collar Conditioning DVD. Or, find a retriever trainer....they can teach you how to use it.
PM kellymccoy, she rejoined after the crash and she has a program for what you are trying to accomplish.
As to your actual question - it should be snug on the neck. You should be able to fit a couple fingers underneath.

That is especially true of e-collars. You should be able to slide two fingers under the collar strap of your e-collar without forcing them. As far as e-collar use goes, I have been an e-collar trainer for over 30 years, and do complete conditioning in the Smartwork system.
