Check out the hunting forum for some tips - if you have never trained a hunting dog before, joining a retriever club or finding a trainer would be highly recommended. My experience has been that it's not so much the dog as me who needs training - and correction

Retriever club memberships are usually inexpensive and they will offer cheap or free training, and lots of contacts with whom you can get together to train. When I looked for a trainer, I found one who would do a 30 minute weekly session for $35 - you do lots of 'homework' between sessions and get feedback and new 'assignments' in the next session.

In the meantime, you start the training with basic obedience: heel, sit and here.

Crongratulations on your new puppy. You will have learning to hunt together.
The Atlanta Retriever Club, Carolina Retriever Club, Carolina-Piedmont Retriever Club, Talahassee Retreiver Club, East Tennessee Retreiver Club are Clubs that you may enjoy. Expect to travel some, training doesn't always happen in your town.
Next, purchase Jackie Mertens DVD called Sound Beginnings. Easy to find on Google.
After that, you need to find a training program that makes since to you. I'm a Mike Lardy fan but that may be a little more complex than you are looking for. Never the less, start with Sound Beginnings. It's a great puppy retriever video.
Enjoy your pup.

Opps, I also meant to add...
You may enjoy Pat Nolan of Ponderosa Kennels in Maryland. Google his site, he has some great puppy retriever articles too.
