Thumbs up Jordyn PASSED her Therapy Dog Evaluation!

I am PROUD to announce Jordyn and I PASSED our therapy dog evaluation this morning!

She scored a 1 on all her scenerios except greeting another dog/handler team in which she got a 2 because she lost focused and got a little excited, but we scored a 1 overall (the highest possible) for the overall test.

We are now members of Bright & Beautiful Therapy Dogs, Inc. and may test for Delta in the near future to do additional work with Animal Assisted Therapy, depending on the opportunities we receive. We are also looking into becoming a Canine Crisis Response Team but we need some visits and experience before becoming certified.

From the streets and the shelter to a beloved therapy dog, her life has surely come full circle!

Congratulations. Hats off to you both.
I know exactly how you fell because my Stafford Shire Jaantay passed her TDI testing yesterday as well!

You should be proud.

Now go out there and get some hunt test titles.

Congratulations! That has to be a very good feeling. And as a team you'll be helping so many people. I wish you the best.

Congrats to you and Jordyn for passing the test! Me and my lab have tried twice to pass and the part with the other handler & dog caused us to fail both times. It is not that my dog is agressive, but she gets excited when she sees the other dog approaching because she loves to play with other dogs. We go lots of different places and I try to expose her to as many other dogs as possible - as long as she can go up to them, she is fine but with the therapy test, they are supposed to remain calm and pretty much ignore the other dog. Any suggestions???? Thanks!

Jordyn does get fairly excited when she meets new dogs and I know it has a lot to do with her age (she is just a little over 1 yr at best guess) so we worked a LOT on her focus, teaching her to look at my face when I give her the focus command and I also try to take a bigger step forward so she can't cross in front of me when she begins to lose focus and look at the other dog.
She also goes to doggy daycare and there are a ton of goldens so I was really worried when the neutral dog came out and happened to be a golden, but she did fine and I think the training really helped prepare us. Keep working on it, you can do it!

Congrats, Jordyn!!

TXdogMom5, don't give up. As you know, it requires a LOT of practice. That section of the test is extremely important! If your dog gets excited about another team approaching during a Visit, your dog could knock someone over, hurt someone, or scare someone. We stood outside our local Pet Store many Saturday mornings. It is actually better practice to work around so many untrained dogs. If your lab can ignore all that distraction, the test team will seem very mild!

Thanks Hailey's Mom and Presidential for the suggestions and words of encouragement - I had watched a recent episode of "It's Me or the Dog" and she taught the owner on the show to use the focus command. I will start working on that and see if that might be the key to our success!!
