Unfortunately, you probably won't know until he reaches full adult size, though you can get a "guestimate" based on how large his parents are. Labs come in every shape and size, so there can be quite a range depending on their breeding, etc.

HI! I am also fairly new to the board. Baloo is 4 months and only weighed 20 pounds at the vet last week. He has long legs and looks scrawny to me but the vet said his weight was fine; better for him to be thin as a puppy. Her best guess was that he would be a small lab at 45-50 lbs. His parents were both around 65 lbs and he wasn't a runt. This was good news to me as I prefer smaller dogs.

Hi and welcome to the board Samantha was 40 lbs at 6 months old, and now she's coming up 2 years and is only 55lbs. I've tried to compare her to her mom, but there's no comparison. Samantha is a smaller dog than her Mom.

Thank goodness I found this board again finally - I've been dying to see the responses! I accessed it at work the first time and didn't bookmark it....two weeks later, here I am!

Thank you all for the responses. I guess growth rate is highly variable! I'm certainly hoping for under 90 pounds!! He doesn't usually jump, but when he gets REALLY excited he'll run up and body check you and he almost knocks me down at 60 pounds...I'll be on my butt if/when he's 90.

I still need to bring a picture of my cutie in, all of your babies are so adorable! I just love labs!! Bogey is the most affectionate one I've had - he sneak attacks you with kisses...

Hope you're all having a great week!

Welcome...again!!!

Im not sure with pure bred labs, as my Avery was listed as a Lab-mix from the local rescue we got her from..

but she's very lab-looking if that makes any sense..

anyhoo...

at 4 1/2 mos. when we got her she was 35 lbs....at 6 months she was 46lbs, at 8 1/2 mos she was almost 61lbs, and now at 11 mos. old she is 66lbs...

from what I've read here, the basic rule of "growing thumb" is....they grow UP as tall as they'll get the first year, and then can grow OUT up to the 2nd year... with weight gain the 2nd year being very minimal...

We're thinking/assuming/hoping Avery will top out around 70lbs...I was hoping for a slightly heavier dog , but maybe the yellow-boy that my DH wants will be bigger...

My vet told me to double the weight at 4 months and that should be about what they will be full grown.

I had an American black who grew to 125lbs but he was extremely active, swimming regularly. He was lean too.

I currently have an English chocolate and he is 50lbs. at 5 months. The sire was 100lbs and the dam was about 55lbs. but had large dogs in her bloodline.

So I wonder the same thing. How big? Honestly, I'm hoping for large but it hardly matters as I am completely head over heels for this little (well he was little once) pup.

I have seen charts for two individual dogs but none for average. Besides it would have to take into account parent size too. I wonder whether American and English grow at different rates...

That makes sense. Molly was around 32 pounds at 16 weeks. I remember because if you double the weeks, you get what they should *about* weight, and hers was exact.

She is close to 70 pounds now. Maybe 68. But she is long and lanky and wouldnt be fat if she gained another 10.

You have these big mastiff looking Labs with big broad heads and wide shoulders and then you have leaner field types. You cant compare them all to eachother.

I will only add this. Using weight alone without height and length does not tell us if he is a thin, average, or overweight dog. Can you feel his ribs with your fingertips when sliding them along the side of his chest in a standing position. Fell them with minimal pressure, but not see them. If not, he is probably over weight. If yes, see if you can find out what the parents weigh/size and you will have a better idea of what you have in your lap.

Hi
I have an English Lab that is now 75lbs at just seven months. He is short and compact. I would say he looks medium sized to me.

His father was about 85lbs and his mother was about 78lbs. I think he will end up bigger. The vet does not think he looks overweight and thinks he will end up somehwere around 90lbs.

I just am not sure how much growth, both in height and weight, to expect between 7 months and 14months. To me, his body looks too short in length for his weight, but he still might be in an awkward puppy state. Anybody have an idea?

I also have an English Lab. He is 13 mths and weighs 85 lbs. His parents weighed about the same as your pup's parents. He is solid muscle! He too went through some awkard stages. He was almost 60 lbs at 5 1/2 mths, so to double his weight would have made him much larger than he is.

We just had Sophie spayed and at 6 mo. she weighed 53 lbs. Her dad (named Tank) is a shorter lab, but weighs 92 lbs.....Tank is a perfect name for him. Her mom weighs around 70 and is a little taller than Tank, but looks real good. Right now Sophie is about as tall as Tank, but built a lot thinner, so we think she'll probably be about the size of her mom...but who knows. We'll wait and see.....
