    Hoku and her Stick

    Hi All—

I've been visiting, but have had a somewhat busy Autumn, so I've not posted much.

Hoku, now 17 months old, continues to be fabulous. She's stabilized at a very muscular and active 87 lbs. It was heavier than I thought she'd be, but it's all muscle and she seems to carry it well.

She's been swimming about 5 times a week either in Lake Washington or Puget Sound, and insists on retrieving "sticks" that weigh some 60 lbs and are hard to throw out into the water. She's a tugboat. Fall and Winter are good times for off-leash in Seattle, so she's getting loads of such time, and is terrific off-leash.

She's also loving our cabin down on the Pacific, where she gets to be off-leash in the front "yard," which is unfenced and rolls down into the forest to the beach. This is a real test (and a bit hard for me), because we are right on the forest—but she knows to stay within the yard, even as neighbor dogs come through, and even as deer walk out in the forest in front of her.

Below, a photo of her with her "stick," and one of her chilling in the front "yard" of the cabin:

Tugboat is indeed a good description for a wellbred Lab in the water. Giant sticks are handled with ease, I'm sure, and no jacket is needed even in cold water with her coat. These were dogs that historically hauled in a day's catch in the frigid waters of Newfoundland, so 60 lb. sticks are a breeze! :-)

What fun! And sounds like a great place for a lab. The only thing not considered a stick to a lab is a tree still rooted in the ground, LOL!

    Don't tell that to Thor.

I love the 'tugboat' descriptor - I'm going to shamelessly steal it.
