Swimming & retrieving a ball are Boomer's two favourite activities. He drops the ball on shore but it always rolls back into the water. This is his classic response when I ask him to re-retrieve the ball. I guess a ball ain't worth retrieving unless he sees it sail through the air first. I can't help pointing at the ball though as it floats away. That's when he'll turn around, make a big show of "Where's the ball?" before he snatches it from the water, retrieves it, drops it on the ground... aaaand it rolls back into the water again.
It was really windy & wavy the other day. It doesn't look it here but the waves were tall enough to block Boomer's view of the ball. A storm was on its way in. I was very glad for the float coat when he swam past the ball without seeing it. Also glad he responded to recall even without the ball. We kept this round to 15 minutes.

Yes but even after two years, it's weird (but oh so cool) to have a retrieving dog. My beagle would retrieve (partially) once or twice before losing interest, and my shepherd had no clue what retrieving was about. I've never had a dog before that is so, I don't know, obsessive about water and/or retrieving. He wakes up & looks for the ball. I open the front door, he retrieves his ball and stands in front of me waiting. If I'm doing chores around the house, he lies on the floor with his ball tucked beside his muzzle. He follows me around with the ball in his mouth. He has the ball while I put his collar & leash on. I'm still not used to it!
So cute Hunter does the same thing lol!

LOL Boomer sounds like a lab a friend of mine had once, he wouldn't go out to potty without his ball in his mouth. If I didn't get to a ball or stick fast enough I could sometimes act like I threw the ball/stick in and mine would go out and get it, sometimes it worked sometimes they just looked at me knowing I tried to pull something over on them.
