    Fall Colors

There is a pond at a local dog park, which has been pretty yucky most of the summer. I went and checked in this past Monday, and the wagter was looking good. We went back today and did some water work. These are some of the shots I was able to get.

"SIT" Technically you're supposed to have the dogs "on leash". 2 seconds after I took this pic the long line came off.

Overall Brooks did a nice job. One of the things we've been working on is "HOLD" coming out of the water. When we were there Monday Brooks dropped the Dokkens 2 or 3 times to shake. Today, it was only once, then he held until I took the Dokken, the shook when I told him too. Progress made.

Love that first shot. I can just hear Brooks's line of thought: "whatcha want me to do, dad? I'm going to sit here all pretend-calm until you give me a command and get me off this dumb leash."

Is the water still warm? If it was as humid where you are as it was here the swim must have been nice and refreshing for Brooks.

Water temp is in the high 60's still. We really haven't had much in the way of cool weather yet. It was 81 today!

    Barry,

SHORT RETRIEVE FROM THE PLACE PLATFORM WHILST BROOKS IS ON A CHECK CORD, REEL HIM IN AND USE THE CHECK CORD TO MAKE HIM J-HOOK, SIT, HOLD, AND DELIVER TO HAND UPON COMMAND "GIVE". RINSE AND REPEAT OVER AND OVER AGAIN IN EACH SUCCESSIVE TRAINING SESSION UNTIL THE CONCEPT OF "HOLD UNTIL COMMANDED TO GIVE" IS FULLY ENTRENCHED. ATTRITION IS THE NAME OF THE GAME SPECIFIC TO ENTRENCHING THIS DESIRED BEHAVIOR IN BROOKS. TAKE CHARGE, BE HIS LEADER. AS HE GAINS PROFICIENCY - CONTINUALLY MOVE THE PLATFORM FURTHER BACK FROM THE SHORE ( DOING SO WILL RESULT IN CONFIDENCE ON THE SEND AND A COMPLETED RETRIEVE ON THE RETURN WITHOUT BROOKS STOPPING TO SHAKE AND DROPPING THE BUMPER). THIS IS ALL RELATED TO THE ELEMENTS OF BOTH OBEDIENCE AND HOLD CONDITIONING, IF EITHER ELEMENT IS MISSING, IT ALL FALLS APART. I HAVE TOTAL FAITH IN TEAM BROOKS - YOU CAN DO THIS.

I'm headed out tomorrow to find something less cumbersome than our normal place board. It's a bit of a hike to get from parking lot to the water, so I'm looking for something that's not slippery, won't hold gallons of water, and can be rolled up.
