Nice shots! I always think, "If I only had a better camera..." The camera I have is fine, I think it's the power behind the lens and I'm just not cutting it. I can't remember how to get a shallower depth of field and putting my camera on Auto doesn't do that. Hey, Ope, how ya doin'?

It really depends on the lens. The wider the aperture (the lower the number) more light gets into the camera, and the DOF gets shallower. Many lenses can't go beyond 3.5 or 4.5. It also depends on the focal length (i.e. zoom). What lens do you have?

My camera is a Canon EOS Rebel XT with a Canon EFS 17-85 mm lens. Part of my problem is not feeling confident setting things manually and I let the auto setting do the work for me. I probably need to go back and read the manual, refresh my meager knowledge of the workings of the camera and practice.

I have two rebels, a T3i and a T5i. You can't break them, you can look in your Manuel and it will tell you how to put all setting back to factory settings if needs be. Play and explore with it, it'll be fun and the good thing about digital is if you're on the wrong ISO/ Fstop etc., and it makes the pics look nasty, the delete button is an easy one to operate, lol.

I am not familiar with that lens but I guess it's a kit lens. Check for the f/ stop. Kit lenses don't usually make nice DOFs. I've tossed mine two years ago and got a 50mm 1.4 which makes great portraits with a nice bokeh. I also have a zoom 70-210 which I use for action shots, because the 50mm is slow at focusing.

If you don't want to use the manual mode, which can be tricky especially if you are not eager to post-process the photograhs, you can set the camera to aperture priority.

It's not the kit lens, I replaced it with this one. I know the camera has an aperture priority setting, so I'll read up on that first. Thanks!
