TRAD loves his work as a hunting retriever.
TRAD has romped among the decoys as we set them since the ripe old age of 9 weeks in October of 2013, a program of early exposure to all things related to hunting with the exception of gunfire. A bit over a full year later, TRAD was right at home as we set the decoys in this morning's pre-dawn light. No longer a pup, TRAD can't wait to get into the blind and start his "watch" for birds.
TRAD has literally grown up in the shadows of me gunning Mates and he is a true ambassador to all that have the privilege of sharing our blind and gunning over him. A well socialized retriever that has great blind manners is a pleasure to spend time with. TRAD'S etiquette in the blind has endeared him to many. One quickly understands that TRAD is there to work.
A "place platform" inside the blind gives TRAD a well defined area that he must go to and stay on when commanded "PLACE". A dog that is under control of the owner / handler in the blind, is much more safe to be around in the hunting environment, does not whine nor bark but rather remains quiet and calmly awaits birds while maintaining watch for their approach.
TRAD is one intensely focused retriever while in the blind. "EYES TO THE SKIES" is his modus operandi and his continuous search for birds as a still very young retriever is a joy for all that gun over him to observe.
Take the time to train expected parameters of acceptable behavior for your retriever in the blind and be consistent in the enforcement of those guidelines. Doing so will result in a hunting environment within your blind that is enjoyable for all, much more safe, and more productive especially so with regard to more efficient and accurate marking of birds by your retriever. Teach good habits right from the start. Allowing bad habits to form and then having to work on correcting them, is just plain poor / lazy work on the part of the trainer. Train to a higher standard and you will be happy you did so.
Cheers,
THE DOG WHISTLER and TRAD
