I thought that too. I didn't think he was overweight and 3kg is a lot. When I was reading about body condition, I came across sites who would show photos of bench bred Labs and call them overweight. I compared him to the Labs on the board and with his sire and they all look pretty similar except those from field lines. I compared him with Cookie yesterday and noticed he had a much more noticeable tuck up. Should we be aiming for that or is his tuck up alright?

Nevertheless, a little extra exercise won't kill him since he'll be deprived of it for 10 days during recovery. We've only reduced his meals to supplement for the extra treats we give him for training. In truth, the only dieting we've done is to increase exercise.

Others may have more to add but my understanding of the "tuck up" is it's more dependent on the anatomical structure of the dog (relating to sternum length/bone length) rather than a dog being over or underweight.

Weight or fat is usually related to and assessed by

    1. The rib test (feel or see)

    and

    2. The waist indent viewing from above (like in your photo).

So I don't think you can create a higher tuckup by dieting when Bobby is not carrying any excess fat there. Also, my understanding is that labs being assessed as conformation labs are not to have such a tuck-up.

Thank for the information, Georgie. Good to know Bobby isn't another overweight Lab. Bobby will be pleased to hear he's not fat.
