    Bobby at 16 Months

We took him to the vet a few weeks ago for his vaccination. We struggled with getting him to stay on the scales so we had to settle for 31kg. Training goal: standing and staying on scales. Vet said that he had "beautiful teeth" and "...you would be surprised at how many need a dental cleaning before two years" when mum jokingly commented that he was only 16 months. He checked his ears and eyes. Good. He checked the motion of the hips. Good. I had to do a sigh of relief there considering the prominence of hip dysplasia in the breed. He does estimate that his ideal weight should be 28kg so we've got 3kg to lose. Bobby is not pleased.

Mum booked him in for a neuter in around two weeks. I know he's not 18 months yet but now is the ideal time for us. Parents will both be home for Christmas break, sister and I are on university and school break respectively. We can monitor him all day since we are on summer break and stitches should be removed in about 10 days anyway. If we did it in February, we wouldn't have this chance. Hopefully, two months won't make that much of a difference. Do their heads get smaller after neutering? I would miss his blocky head.

Anyway, took some photos yesterday. Here they are:

Oh mah gerd, cupcakes! (If anyone is curious at what he is looking at, it is a tray of cupcakes.)

Am I dreaming? A whole cupcake for me?!

Me, my smile and my wagging tail! Aren't my teeth beautiful?

    Bunny-eared Bobby!

    He so handsome!

I think it's more important that you are planning neutering when you can supervise him then when not. His head will stay the same and a gorgeous one it is.

I sure hope he got that cupcake!

Thanks! With the look he was giving, he got a small piece. He sat there staring with a tortured face but we told him he couldn't have more because he was on a diet. He huffed.

Bobby is looking good. I see he puts up with his Owner messing with his ears without complaint.

    Absolutely agree!

Some vets who aren't experts in labs will give the standard worn-out advice about labs and their weight and then give the standard statistical average without knowing that the lab may be absolutely perfect!

I think some of them spend a huge amount of time with smaller dogs with totally different physical shapes that they forget to really look at the individual dog and breed. Even I know that after spending a lot of time at the dog park with no other labs and only dogs that were smaller breeds or sporting/farming dogs I started to loose perspective and think my lab was over- weight and her deep chest started to look real obvious. Even owners of other breed dogs often throw in the line "overweight lab" when they are textbook healthy weight.

Bobby looks stunningly healthy with absolutely no excess weight to loose.

Well, he did do the "feel test." However, it might have been difficult to accurately determine considering Bobby kept wiggling. He does have a tuck and a waist, albeit it not being as deep as some other Labs. When I do the "feel test," I can feel them. Although, I'm not really sure what defines "light pressure." In truth, based on photos, he resembles his sire in terms of confirmation. Initially, I did think he was of an OK weight and at most, a kilo or two too heavy. I know what you mean when it comes to other dogs though. I've petted short haired breeds like the boxer before and it's a lot easier to feel their ribs (either that or they're underweight).

We have reduced his meals slightly since we are training more now. Mainly, I focus on increasing his exercise since he has gotten a bit lazy as he gets older.

I'll try to take a side view and a top view of him tomorrow and post it up.

Bobby has always been tolerant of physical contact. He loves being petted! From a young age, we've been getting him used to being handled for veterinary exams (e.g. checking his teeth, holding his paw, etc) and to make sure he's OK with kids who don't quite know how to handle dogs, we would play with his ears, tail, etc. I don't think he minds it. If you do it long enough, he'll lie on his back for a belly rub.

He is so handsome! I love that face! And I agree, I think having to opportunity to supervise him well after the neuter will be more important than the timing. Maggie went back to spending timed tethered to me or furniture after her spay. They are really quite oblivious to the fact that they have sutures.
