At the Beach! (And dealing with off-leash)

Down at our new beach property this weekend. I admit that I have been so nervous about Hoku off leash, I have never gone with the boys when they walk her through the forest (our front yard here empties into the dune forest) and out to the beach. This morning, I went for it. We walked through the whole forest, and then to the beach, with her off-leash. She kept to the trail, would stop if one of us got too far behind her, once came back to get me when I'd stopped to take photos. On the beach, she was amazing; explored but never ran off, and came quickly when called. Ok, I'm convinced. She can do it.

Looks like a lovely spot! Ours do fine off leash until they see another dog, a small child, or an elderly person creeping along on their morning constitutional. At that point, all bets are kind of off. I trained them to respond to an e-collar and they will generally run back to me when they hear the tone. For us, cheese helps that process. On days that no other people are near, they do a great job. Hoku's a lucky pup to have such a gorgeous playground!

She did run up to a couple with two dogs yesterday, which was a fail (she was interested in the people, not the dogs, hah!). But generally she ignores other dogs or people. I was really nervous, but ended up quite impressed.

Beautiful pictures, Hoku looks like she had a wonderful time

I have had a couple that I would never be able to take anywhere off leash and a couple that I could.

Beautiful spot - you and Hoku are very lucky!

As for off-leash, my girls (same age as Hoku) have been fine off-leash when they are with their mother on hikes through the woods, and ok on their own as well. Sass did give me some trouble the other day when I had her and Chloe at the park .... she refused to come out of the water, even when I gave her an actual recall command (which she does know). She didn’t try to run away, she just refused to get out, LOL. I had to resort to taking Chloe and pretending we were leaving at which point Sass came running up like “don’t leave me!”. Needless to say she lost her off-leash privileges for the rest of the day and did the rest of her swimming on a Flexi.

She does! Whenever we arrive she hops out of the car, makes a quick trip to the cabin, then heads off, all "time to go to the beach now!"
