ofcourse the tennis balls are in the snow so we have to use bigger toys. Even though she is not a pure lab her drive to retrieve is crazy. She will go till she dies if i let her.

i do not go too crazy with the ball as tugs i am told can break tooth, also retrieving i shut her down every a few retrieve to do obedience and then as a treat she retrieves.i actually use tennis balls as treats when i use hand signal training.

My boy, Zeke, loves the snow too. I make snowballs for him to look for he loves diving in and trying to find that elusive ball.

    For what it's worth ...

    Dental Wear and Tear

Choking hazards aside, tennis balls pose another risk: dental wear and tear.

That green fuzz might seem soft, but tennis balls are designed to withstand tennis courts and rackets. Dr. Thomas Chamberlain, a board-certified veterinary dental specialist, warns that the fuzz is actually quite abrasive, and accumulated dirt and sand increases the abrasive quality of the ball. As your dog chomps on a tennis ball, the fuzz acts like sandpaper, gradually wearing down her teeth in a process called “blunting.” This can eventually lead to dental problems such as exposed tooth pulp and difficulty chewing.

took some work, some where -maybe here i read that you start with 2 balls and throw the 2nd when she bring the first back and drops in the opposite direction. i did this when she was 3 or 4 months and it was the best tip to train them to retieve and drop at your feet. She also knows give where she will give it to me in my hand . I manly use it at home to give back the kids toys, empty cat food cans or if i am feeling lazy the tv remote which i have trained her pick up and give me.

Diggity is 100% on retrieve and even delivers to my hand when we are in the house. Outside, if I throw the ball from the deck, he will run it back up the stairs and either return to my hand or closeby. However, if I go down into the yard and throw the ball, he wants me to chase him. It is the weirdest thing. Trying to figure out how to translate the retrieve to the deck to the retrieve in the yard! I might have to try the two balls trick!

I had a fellah who is a professional trainer, mostly for police dogs, tell me about the two ball method, and as you found out as well, it really does work.

When I am in the house tossing the ball Zeke will bring it back to my hand. Outside though, he tosses it back to me, you can see that in this video.
